Hi - you may try asking the question in the "small compact digitals" section of the forum, since there may be people that are more familiar with the S1 there. I think that you'll find with a little work and getting to know the camera, the S1 can take images of Niagara Falls successfully.
My suggestion - even though it has IS, is to use a tripod because if the shutter speeds are too long, even IS won't be able to deal with it. Also, set your ISO up higher, to 200 or 400. Give the camera a chance to perform for you before you try to trade to a different model.

i agree abotu the tripod, and experimenting with different settings before downikng your equipment. again, please do post this question in the compact digitals section. you will certainly get more of a response as to what settings are best for use with that camera. take care.

Having a tripod will most certainly help when taking a night time photography for all the above mentioned reasons. It would help if you could also post a sample of the picture that you are disappointed with.

Just a curious question, did you use a flash??? and post a few picture if you really looking for advise. There alot of very good Photographers here and they have been very helpful. Also include the setting use for the shots. Oh, and use a more captivating heading so more people will visit.

The night-shot mode on the cam makes a long-term exposure and fires the flash on the first or second curtain.
The long-term exposure is for the background and the flash is for the foreground (people).
You absolutely need a tripod for the long-term exposure. The IS is not for preventing blurring during several seconds for during a tenth of a sec or so.
The problem with the white dots will always appear because of the flash. I guess the air is full of water droplets near the niagar-falls, that's why there are all these white points (flash illuminates the droplets).
