Good evening folks.

Just bought a Manfrotto 234RC tilt/swivel head for my Manfrotto 681 Monopod today.

Just wondering if anyone out there uses this combo with a 100-400L and how they feel about it? My concern is, is it going to be enough for the 100-400 out in the field shooting birds?

I have attached the plate to the 100-400 and tried it on the head & monopod and it seems to feel pretty good. The one thing I did notice is that the round piece of the 234RC that attaches to the round top of the 681 is quite a bit smaller. The flat top of the 681 is quite big.

Any feed back on this combo would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks.

I guess nobody has this setup?

Should I have gotten the 486CR2 ball head instead?

The tilt head is a popular monopod solution and will be fine with the 100-400.

The RC2 QR clamp I always worried about and while it never actually let me down, it never inspired any confidence and I spent the whole time checking it to "make sure". Eventually I replaced it with a Markins QR-60 and RRS camera and lens plates.

I've borrowed a 681/234 combo from a friend a couple of times and it's worked fine with a 70-200 2.8 and 100-400. You do need to make sure the small allan screw at the bottom of the 234 is tight, otherwise it can get loose and introduce some wobble.

Personally I'm going to invest in a lighter (CF) setup.
