I have been trying to find a dealer who has the Sigma 80-400 OS available to 'test out'.

Found one yesterday and his was only willing to let play with it on his tethered 350D the overall impression was very positive. Next time I will take a CF card with me!

I am considering this lens (or the 75-300 DO IS Canon) for a safari trip in September & I will have to get the expenditure passed by the boss (she who must be obeyed!).

However, my dilemma is that when I said to the sales guy that the newer DG version has been released he offered me the stock model at £750. This is a big saving compared to the lowest price I have seen of £899.

To be frank I am tempted but my reservation is on two levels a) that the DG version is worth waiting for & (more importantly) b) the strife I will face spending that sort of money before I have had the chance to lay the ground work!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear!

Welcome to the forums! I have a rule for times like these. Well maybe call it an axiom, anywhooo... "Sometimes it is better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission." Whats a couple nights on the couch for a killer lens? LOL. Otherwise start wearing her down now so you can make your buying deadline.

It's a great lens choice and I'll do the same towards the year end when I will need an IS/OS for a walking safari. I have tested the lens and handling is excellent. Note that Kerso can supply for around the £600 mark and seems a trusted seller. See here:

Am considering going down that route, but I love my Sigma 100-300mm F4 too much and I'd have to sell it first :(

consider yourself lucky...i try to convince my parents to help me out when buying camera lenses and such because im still in college and money is really just not there when it comes to big purchases. least you are asking permission to use your own money

Dante is definitely King when it comes to dealing with the other half. I can add nothing! Listen very carefully to every word he utters in that particular matter.
