What's the main difference between CF and CF II? Is it just an access and write speed issue, or is there some other advantage?

I replied on your other thread, which a mod has apprently deleted.

There's no such thing as CF and CF II. Do you mean CF Type I and Type II? I've never seen anything that's type one so it's not an issue.

btw you're gona get spammed big time using your email address as your user ID.

Thanks, I got another reply that said the type II was thicker, and that was the only difference. I assume therefore that a type II will be fine with my 300D?

I realised my mistake with my username, but I couldn't find how to change it... Any ideas??

Yes, a type I or type II CF card will work with all current Canon DSLR at least from D60 onward.

By using CF type II form factor some manufacturers can get large capacities or faster write times, but typically a few months later the same speed and capacity will be available in CF type I form factor. All micro-drives I know of are type II, but not all type II are micro-drives.
