Yeah, I did it in 2009 and finished mine up yesterday.
Edit: I've migrated it from PixelPost over to my regular blog. I'm still having some issues, but here's the updated link.
http://www.justinacuffphotography.com/category/photo-a-day-2009/
It's a lot of work. Some days it was about trying out a new post processing method. Other days it was about a challenging subject. In the end, it tells a story of one year. Some shots were forced and I really wasn't happy with, while others turned out better than I had thought. I was also able to market it a little bit and got in with a couple of galleries that now regularly invite me to show and sell work there.
Good luck!

Really the thing to making a Project 365 successful is having LOTS of people follow you. I had a few follow on that website, but most followed on Facebook since I also posted the photos in a couple of albums there. The more followers you have to keep you accountable, the more likely you'll be able to finish it successfully.

I need to do one of these instead of being on the internet for hours a day while my camera sits on the desk collecting dust. :-|

I started lst year on June 1 so today will be day 216. I have a set on flickr for my daily pics, and upload them to project 365 group there. My goal is to take the pic - I upload them to flickr avery 2 or 3 days (depending on how many pics I've taken.) I've also turned my blog into my project, and since the project started the only things I've put on there are my project pics.
I certainly don't get a great shot every day - some shots are just family snapshots. But I've gotten some beautiful photos as a result of *thinking* about shooting every day. And I think that's the point.
Here is my blog if you want to take a look: www.karmaisaboomerang.blogspot.com

Like the idea behind it, but won't be doing it...long for the days to not pick up a camera at times!
Here's a twist, 365 days in the life of someone else, every day picking a different person. 365 people, 365 jobs or what they do. Now that'd be a project!

I've been doing a photo a day of my kids since the day they were born. My daughter (mmad.udkow.com) is up to day 1016 and my son (ooad.udkow.com) is at day 186. I've never missed a day and have always posted the photos the same day they were taken. I love it, and my kids love having their photo taken.
For anyone who does it, take the time to make a photo book out of the photos. Getting a 365+ page book of your work is so cool (granted it's like $80/book, but still worth it).
BTW, I plan on continuing until it's no longer fun for them (yes, I'll continue it forever if I can). :)

I actually started this a couple days ago as well :) I am hoping that I can stick to it, I posted a link from my facebook page hoping that my friends will keep me going, so we shall see!
Also was thinking at the end it would be great to do a photobook of it, so I am glad to hear that others have enjoyed doing that and that its worth the money.

I also started a 365 project this year. So far I'm two for two. I hope I can make 365 shots. I'll probably need to start writing down ideas as they come to me, because I think in about a week I will have run out.

I've done this for the past 4 years, though the last few months of 2009 were just too busy for me to be able to keep up with it. I don't maintain any strict rules on when I can upload the photo for the day, and if I miss a day here or there I don't worry too much about it. It's my project so I'm allowed to bend the rules and have fun. :)
Good luck with yours!

I'm giving it a whirl, and going to try to not use any racing related photos for this project. That may make some days a bit tough, but I can see myself trying some things out of the norm for me.
I can also see my facebook friends dropping me like a hot potato as this goes on...LOL
But I am sure the one thing it almost has to do for certain is improve your way of seeing things

I've thought about doing something along this line. I don't think I'd manage to keep up for 365 days, though. Perhaps the '28 days of February' for a start.
Just wondering, for those who've done this, on days when you shoot a lot, how do you pick your 'photo of the day'? The rest of the time, do you carry your camera with you all day, even to work, to get a photo each day?

On days I shot a lot, I would pick either my most unique photo or the photo that I thought best told the story of why I was photographing that day.
Stringing for a paper means I usually always have a camera body or two and a few lenses in the trunk of my car in case of a last minute assignment. However, I also found it very handy to almost always carry my G9 with me. It's small enough that it is quite portable yet still has full manual control and decent quality.

I don't think I will last the 365 as well... I can't say I would be surprised if I made it tho. I will NOT just do a snapshot tho, I would rather miss a day than do a snapshot style picture.
Its setting yourself a real challenge. I know I could do a month, that's easy (for me) a year is a nice challenge.
For me as far as picking a photo... its not too tough. Right now I am shooting mostly indoors due to weather and I am setting up shots for myself. So I generally am taking about 30-40 pictures of this set-up shot from all different angles, and with different lights and such. I then am only really picking which view and exposure I like the best. Then do some editing and put a border on it and I am done :)

Yeah, a regular account only lets you upload 200 photos. If that's all you use it for and only upload one a day, the last day you'll be able to upload is July 19.

Consider the cost of 4x6 prints against the cost of an 8x10 book, and the book is actually quite reasonable.

Depends how many pages you want your book to be, and what size book, and if you want each day to have a single page, or multiple days on a page.
I use the Booksmart software from www.blurb.com (http://www.blurb.com)
I'm dedicating a single page to each day.
I have done 160 page books for Snowcross and Sprint Cars for the last two seasons, along with a Best of the Year book using this software

Oh, and if anyone decides to do a book, try to do it as you go along as opposed to sitting down aty the end of the year and doing it all at once. Watching a book coming together will help keep you motivated.
I've done it both ways, and now work as I go along. My Project 365 book is up to date as we speak, and Freeze Frame 2010 is having the 1st race put together as I type.

Are most of you going in to your shots with ideas already in your head or are you just going out to places and finding something? I've just been going to places with no shot in mind and picking my best or favorite from that shoot. I may eventually decide to pick "themes" for each month, but try to get a large variety of shots from that theme.
So far this month, all of my shots have been in and around the beach or beach cities. It's hard for me during the week to get out, since I only have between 30-60 minutes of sunlight to get a shot. I'm trying not to do a lot of night shots, although I will do a few eventually.

I am now taking the camera with me, even when I go to work. Just in case. However most will be random things, although I want to try and get each one to capture the main thing I did that day, but obviously not always possible.

In some ways, just taking a camera with you with nothing in mind can really be a good way to challenge your creativity. There were several times I would just show up at a place that I had never been to before to scout it out for future shoots as part of my project last year.

I thnk the hardest part for me is going to be coming up with things to shoot and not being repetative :) So far I have only been shooting things kinda spur of the moment, but I do have a couple of locations that I would like to go and shoot that I know are in my area.
I was also thinking of having a place on my blog where people (mostly family and friends but open to anyone) gave me photo requests/challenges of things to shoot. Just thought that might help me get ideas and also challenge myself

I just go someplace and try to figure out something that will have appeal. I mean I know I could drive to Niagara Falls as its only an hour away and take a shot, but I think every honeymooning couple has done that to death.
I'm trying not to do a lot of night shots, although I will do a few eventually.
Now on this project, 2 of my 5 shots have been at night, and I could go shoot at anytime of the day if I was so inclined. But I love night time, almost more then I love a nice sunny day when it comes to shooting. There is a certain magic in the late evening and night.

I just started mine on the first:

I'm also making a list and adding to it whenever I think of a new idea. I will be unabashadly stealing good ideas too if I like them! :)
But seriously, the whole idea of this is to foster creativity and come up with ideas, so that's my stated goal.
So far, so good!

I considered a one shot per week project (i.e. Project 52) but it's not as dedicated or anything so I'll just wait till next year or something!

Jesse - I was happy with my original shot...However upon seeing yours I can really see how I could have improved it, mine looks flat. However sticking to the rules, I will keep my original shot in my 365. Just out of interest what did you play with? I presume upped teh contrast a fair bit, and altered the levels?
360 - Think a self portrate is a great idea. Unless I see anything else good today, that will be mine.
Don;t know about you guys, but on a day to day basis I'm thinking that there is more and more stuff that I can get a photo off, which means when I get stuck I can resort to take photos of that lol.

Oh yeah, definitely keep your shot for your 365, I just wanted to show you what I did. Yes, a couple of level layers mostly did it, some contrast tweaking, a bit of curves and a tad of sharpening.

I could see the lights from this town thats ten miles away bouncing off the clouds, so I drove over there, and shot this. I think there is more there, but I ran out of battery from using live view. So far every shot has been outside, and trying to keep that theme rolling as long as I can

I need to do one of these instead of being on the internet for hours a day while my camera sits on the desk collecting dust. :-|
I agree. For example, in our member profile in POTN there should be a limit to how many hours we spend on here. If you exceed the limit Pekka's AVATAR comes up telling you to go out and take pictures. ;)

What kind of rules is everyone placing on themselves for this, if any?
I've pretty much decided no self portraits, no flowers (although I did take a shot of some cactus, but it was a bunch of them growing wild), and no "snapshots." I am also trying to compose the shot as I would want it to look after PP. Meaning, that I am trying not to crop the shot at all.
I'm doing this to help improve on my photo skills (and PP skills) and not just posting random shots I took in a day. I might end up breaking the first two rules at some point during the year, but that is okay. I just don't want to break the third one. I've also started a blog about this project after some friends convinced me to write about it.

No snapshots
No racing photos
Only cropping is for the Blurb book I am making, since its cheaper then 4x6 prints.
No self portraits. ( I see myself in a mirror everyday, thats enough)

No Snapshots
the no cropping one? psh I wouldn't call that one, nor would I call no selfs one either...
For me its simple:
One photo a day, Must be taken, PPed, and posted online during that day. Done lol thats it for me.

What kind of rules is everyone placing on themselves for this, if any?
Take at least one photo each day. Snapshots are okay, heavily processed images are okay, posting a weeks worth of photos is okay. I work long hours and I have an 11 month old at home so I know there will be days that I can't sit at the computer and edit/post an image. I want to keep it as flexible as possible and try to keep my creativeness going - I've got a running list of photo ideas that I want to occomplish.
