So I have the gear in my sig. I use the 300 daily as it is my heavy duty worker.. But it has been lingering in my mind lately of buying a 400 2.8 IS or non IS. I would pair this up with another 1dmkIV. Talk me out of it. Begin.

If you sell the 300 pick up a 1.4EXT to put on the 70-200 to make up the middle ground. I don't make enough off sales to justify a 400. The 300 with the 1.4EXT works in daytime and night with flash.
With a MK2N as a backup don't know why another MK4 would be necessary, unless cash is falling out of your pockets:D

nah id keep the 300 lol... As far as the 2nd mkIV... better high ISOs for the most part. not saying the mkIIn doesnt do well, but I mean. a usable 12800 is pretty nice.. lol

if $7K+ doesn't talk you out of it, nothing we could say would. :D

That said - it may be the best $7k you ever spend, it is an amazing lens.

So you want us to talk you out of it... ok....

If you buy another 1dmk4 and a 400 2.8 a terrible curse will afflict you and your whole family. Everything you touch will turn into lenses and cameras (think King Midas)

=P

Depending on this what are you shooting. For me 400/2.8 is useless lens.... way to heavy to lug it up and down the hills, and not much longer then 300/2.8. So my choice was 500/4 next to 300/2.8. But as I wrote... it depends what are you doing.

Dave,
You currently have a 1DMIV in your posseion?
And you will buy another 5k body on top of a 7k lens on top of a previously purchased 5k body?
You must be raking in the $$$ there in St.Louis or have a nice inheritnece stash...lol. I guess if you factor in selling the 300 you'd only be out a bit more than 13-14k in equipment for the start of the year.
I would love to have a 400 2.8 on my 1DM3 to go along with my 1DMIIN and 70-200 2.8 for field sports comming this year, but the economy has set my purchasing ambitions back a bit.
Well if you can afford it power to ya.
Realisticly only you know what you need or can afford or can justify in your market and your bussiness decisions.
I would love to see some shots from your M4 though. Low light situations would be awsome. Please post some!

Dave,

Go for the 400. The bokeh is just the best. Yes, the 300 is more versatile and I certainly would not trade the 300 for the 400, but for field sports like football and soccer, it is just a terrific lens. The worst that can happen is that you decide you made a mistake a year from now and sell it for $500 less than you paid for it. You shoot a ton of images, have the skill and the passion and would put that lens to good use. It will always bother you if you don't try it.

Can't wait to see you pair it with the 1D Mark IV.

Cheers!

Phil

If you have the money to get a 400 understanding it's a long term investment you'd be a complete idiot not to get one. I don't use IS all that often, but when you need it it's sure nice to have.

...don't mind the fat guy going through your mail daily btw, I just don't want to wait till Spring Training to get a IV.

I'd say go for it on getting the 400, but beef up your lighting gear and spend some time with your mIV before diving on a second mIV body.

Having more strobes opens all sorts of creative possibility when shooting portraits. If you're a 1-man shooter, looking into the CyberCommander system might be handy. Having additional strobes is also great when covering hockey, basketball and other flash-friendly indoor sports.

Another lighting option to consider is the Quantum QFlash.
It's far more powerful than a speed light, but much more portable than the ABs. Bracket mountable with a battery pack, it's great for impromptu portrait work, daylight fill flash and great for getting action shots from night games.

The extra lighting is not "required" ... but they open up far more creative and coverage options than simply having a second mIV body.

I have no use for the cybercommander as I am not in a studio setting. I have no use in extra lighting really unless I wanted to pump two more b800s out. I might buy some Vag's

anyway.. well after this morning it doesnt look like any of this will be happening anyway. we got about 6-8 inches of snow and i crashed my car.. so that needs to be taken care of first. bummer.. :(

Most of photos here (http://www.photo.si/news/10010300) are taken with mk4 (yeah I know too small sample to see much, and iso is not really in 1000+ range). I obviously screwed up with color settings, since neutral picture style makes **** out of photos (really low contrast, really low saturation), but otherwise it feels like nice camera. And af feels like working really good this time... even for speed around 100km/h when they are coming straight down at you. And that's pretty nice thing, considering we gave up mk3 around body #4 or 5.

Pro or non-pro doesn't really matter. What matters is how you lug that lens around. For anything you mentioned it's fine, since you bring it with car almost to sidelines. In my case, I'm skiing down the slope (or sometimes even walking) with all equipment in backpack. For this, you really don't want extra kilo or two compared to 300/2.8 or 500/4.
To be honest, for soccer I would consider 400/2.8 as ideal lens, while for basketball it's way too long (at least for Euroleague matches around here). But I have no idea about football and baseball, since these two sports literally doesn't exist here :)

totally understandable... I see this more of a soccer/football/baseball lens than anything. my 300 will also double up with it as well for those. I dont even go over 200 mm on a crop for basketball because I find anything longer is too long. But that is just my shooting style.

I generally feel the same way, but last soccer season I had 2-3 night-time portrait shoots where I was shooting team and player portraits at their field lit with a set of 4 strobes. I arrived very early to setup and do test shooting to finally adjust the power of the lights to where I liked ... but it would have gone a lot faster and easier if I had a commander instead of walking around adjusting each light individually to get the look I was after.
Given that experience, (and several instances of needed to cover multiple gyms at single venue ... or very very large rooms), I'd personally still be considering adding more lighting rather than a second mIV body in a situation where I already had another 1D body as backup.

Guess you have to be careful what you wish for when you start up an open "talk me out of it thread". Never know where the answer is going to come from.
Good luck.

Maybe not, but if I was in the market for this lens at a $700.00 or better savings I would drive the 325 miles (1/2 way) to avoid the risk of shipping, but I was driving that twice a week a few months ago every week fro the last 5 years. But then again it usually only rains around here not snow.
