Hello, I am new to this forum and thought this might be the right area to post a problem I have been gnashing my teeth over the past few hours.

I got the above error when copying my files from a Lexar memory card to my hard drive. I recently purchased a Canon Rebel XT. I shot about 400 pics over the weekend and now when I try to extract from the memory card (a 1GB flash card), I am able to extract 80% of the pics, but the other 20% give me the error "cannot copy the parameter is incorrect."

I tried to open some of them on the memory card but got an additional error that said "could not open because a jpeg marker segment length is too short--the file may be truncated or incomplete"

About 40 of the photos involved a long portrait sitting and finally, I managed to extract those and get them onto my hard drive via zoombrowser. However, there are about 30 photos I still can't download.

I shot them ALL in Parameter I, not RAW or anything exciting. Is this a memory card problem or a canon problem? I've had my Rebel a month, have been downloading every day with never this problem. The only difference is this time I shot in quantity. Any ideas? I am so grateful if anyone has an explanation. I have to shoot a wedding next weekend and this scares me.

Are you using a card reader or transferring from the camera?

It seems clear that some of the JPEG files are corrupted on the CF card. Both types of software are having troubles with those files.

First, you want to plug the CF card into a card reader and attempt to copy all files to some new directory on your hard disk. That may or may not work.

Second, you want to plug the CF card into the card reader and use image recovery software to attempt to recover the files. If that works, then copy the recovered ones into the new directory.

If that still does not work, then you may want to cut your losses and forget about the bad image files. Again with the CF card in the card reader, let the computer do a complete format of the card. Then move the card to the camera and let the camera do its format on it. Then try to use it again on something unimportant. If the CF card repeats its difficulties, then chuck it in the circular file or return it to the vendor. However, you want to make sure that you, the user, did not cause the files to be corrupted. You might have done that if you opened the CF card door while it was still writing the files or updating the file allocation table.

Pam, to answer your question, I put the card directly into the card reader. That works 99% of the time without having to fiddle with zoombrowser, etc.

Bob, That was a lot of info for which I thank you. I agree with you that some of the files somehow got corrupted. The fact this also happened a month ago is scary, esp since I have to shoot a wedding w/this 1-month old camera on Saturday.

Since I posted this I found a forum relating to Lexar cards which documents a strange problem arising from Lexar cards and Canon Digital Rebel camera combination where files are damaged or erased. I am not sure if my exact problem is involved but I am certainly going to exchange my card. I believe that there is an article in an upcoming photography mag on this. I wonder if anyone else on this forum uses a combo of lexar and canon rebel.

I went to the dealer today who was out of all large memory cards, but suggested a Hitachi might be a choice if theLexar problem is really a reality.

If you are interested in the link I will post it next time I write. Thank you again for the time you took in responding to this problem.
