Well here are my pics from my first time ever shooting basketball, all shot ambient, XSI, F/2.0 or 2.2... ISO 1600. Any thoughts or ways to improve?? Thanks

well the majority of them you missed focus or they were soft. I am assuming you know that you need to be on AF Servo correct?

Exposure looks alright, might push it another 1/3 stop.

Watch your tilts and cropping. crop tight but not to cut off limbs. Tilts need to be fixed in pp.

Yes, just like everyone said the nifty is very bad at focusing in low light, I quickly see an 85 1.8 in my future :D These were on Servo.

What shutter speed were you using?

I was shooting AV Mode and shutter speeds were between 1/400 and 1/640

I am relatively new at shooting sports and this is my first season shooting basketball. I would recommend shooting in manual mode and keeping your ss above 1/500. I shoot our JV team and even at 1/500 I see some motion. 1/500 should be your minimum speed when shooting the action.

You have some great action shots, but I have to agree with cannonnoob's comments. They are slightly OOF and a little soft.

Good luck and have fun.

All I can say is, they're a heck of a lot better than what our local newspaper photogs do.
