Just Order Canon 70-200 F/4 what UV filter should I buy is the Super HMC really much better then the HMC UV filter? I know its only like $5 diffrence but would I notice the diffrence???

By the way I paid $569 from Amazon.com -$25 rebate they have going on plus I applied for the amazon.com visa credit card -$30 which I will pay off as soon as the first billing cylce begins. $514 brand new... Now I just want a UV filter to protect the front lens but not effect the image quality

Where are you getting the filters so cheap? I just ordered a Hoya Pro 1 Digital DMC Wide Band Circular Polarizing Filter and it was $100. I thaught the UV was about $40

Those filters are $70 and $40 from bhphotovideo.com, i'd be very suspicious of places selling them so much cheaper. That store isn't even listed on resellerratings.com, which is a bad sign.

Looking at the brief details on B&H, the cheaper filter is slightly thicker and has no front thread, which should be fine. You only need a front thread for stacking filters, I think.

Personally I buy B&W filters, I find them easier to clean.

L glass should get a decent filter. I'd go with the B+W multicoat UV. Its only ~40 bucks.

I got the 7 year Mack warranty for my 70-200mm f/4 and registered it online. It was only $24.95 at B&H, which is pretty much free after the $25 mail-in rebate :)

Are you sure? You don't need the front thread to stick a lens cap on, but you' dneed something there. I don't know much about filters, just what I have on my lenses.

Why put a filter on the lens at all, unless you are shooting in dusty or wet conditions. The lens comes with a very nice hood, use it for protection and use a filter if needed. A UV filter is like a condom, only put it on if you need it for protection :-)

Well, I carry a UV filter in my camera bag at all times, I just put it on if I am shooting in conditions that justify it. But your point is well taken , this debate is as old as photography I think :-)

Agreed, I have used B+W with great luck. Not the most inexpensive, but the better things usually aren't. ;)

I agree with him. The hood should offer more than enough protection. Unless you plan on not shooting with the hood on, I wouldn't buy a filter for your new 70-200
L Other Lenses like my 17-40L and the others in the my sig all have filters because I don't use the hoods as often or I just don't have them.

Are there people still paying (buying UV filters) good money to degrade their lens' optic quility? I thought that went out with the "Inquisition".
