it goes for less on eBay... last time I checked it was more expensive than the mII, but not by much :

Don't know about UK prices, but in Germany it's normally somewhere between EUR 110 and EUR 140.

Andy

These are both cheap lenses and I would prefer the guarantee of a new one, even if a plastic mount! I'm not convinced the Mk 1 is any better and suspect it comes down to sample QA.

I bought my Mk1 with an EOS 650 attached to the back of it for 149 US Dollars. Pretty sure thats less than 100 English Pounds.

If it's as good as the one I had? it is worth the square root of bugger all.

oh well, i'll go and buy a new MK II then....instead of waiting for a good cheap MK I to appear on eBay! thanks!

I am definitely very happy with mine ... bought it for $ 115, and that included a 'Canon' UV filter and a rubber lens hood.

Very nice lens with decent build quality ... definitely feels *a lot* better than my 18-55 kit lens (and I am one of the persons for whom this is important). Only thing that has a very cheap feel is the MF ring.

The reason why I am going to sell it again is that the bokeh is not nice at all (same as the MKII version) and therefor it does not always work great for portraits. I'll sell it once I get my 85/1.8.

Best regards,
Andy

well, I got a mkII for little over £50...so if I look after it I know it'll last. plasic mount doesn't seem much of a problem to be honest...yet! if it does then its not a mind blowingly big loss

hey there - well, if you decide to sell it, let me know first!!! i'd certainly be interested in it....depending on when you actually sell it tho....don't think i can wait months! heh.

If it was worth £100 to you, then that is what it is worth. You may spend the next six months finding one for £90. Then again it will be six months older!

The m-II is largely enough to get the feeling of the lens, I felt. I immediately realized how much I liked it, and (almost) immediately decided to get that f1.4 one... And THAT lens is pretty much glued to the 350D now. I absolutly love it.

well, i don't know what it is worth. that's why i asked. i definitely do not want to pay too much for this simply because i see the first available lens. i'm not desperate, i don't think. so i can wait..or just get the MK II....
besides...i have my eyes set on a sigma 150 macro! yummy! so need to save up my pennies!

BUZE - darn! you guys are making me really want to get a 50! i might get the MK II now and just get an MKI or a 1.4 in the near future...

If you get a Mk2 there is no need to get a Mk1 unless you are totally set on having a metal mount yet cant wait for a Mk1 to show up. The Mk2, optically, is the same as the Mk1. I like the feel of my Mk1 over the Mk2's, but then again it will probably soon be retired to film duty while I upgrade to a 50mm 1.4.

I think it's a very good plan, the 1.8 mII will definitly tell you what you need to know : 1) do you like the framing at 50mm 2) Do you like depth of field that thin.. For me it was "yes" to #1 and "YES!" to #2. Now I'm hooked to fast primes :D
Here are the very first shots I did with the mII as I was pretty much learning it :

When I saw that beer picture something clicked in my brain, I haven't looked around me with the same eye as before since! (and yes, it was regular beer :D)

I got all of my recent kit fron 7dayshop; they have prices that are incredibly low, especialy for Canon stuff (Sigma is slightly less interesting). They deliver the lens in 1st class (next day, most of the time) and the rest (smaller kit) arrives a couple days later. And no duty/vat issues like with the Honk Kong exports.
I'm not affiliated, just a happy customer so far.

If you want to shop on eBay, download "jBidWatcher" it's a freeware eBay tool helper, and you can keep track of the items you want to buy. Just track of few of them to completion BEFORE you bid on anything; you'll get a feel of the market for that item, and when you decide to buy, you know you won't be screwed.

Muscleflex ... rest assured, I'll keep that in mind :D

However, I have to warn you that it is quite likely (as far as I know myself  ) that I will end up keeping both lenses...

Andy

You might try to contact some of these sellers on German eBay if they would be willing to ship the lens to the UK (although they did not indicate it).

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80372&item=7523313382&rd=1 (this one might be a bit beaten up)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80378&item=7525021310&rd=1 (looks like a lens in decent condition, seller indicates ... ' interested parties in other countries, ask before bidding')

This one will be available to 'Europe'
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=80372&item=7524943881&rd=1

Many sellers are only too lazy (or don't think about it enough) to offer selling their items to any other countries than their local country, but may be happy to do wol.

If you ask, be sure to mention that this lens normally fetches higher prices in the UK, they might be interested

Andy

Well, I sort of  translated them ... they basically say the same thing ... 50/1.8 for sale, sharp lens, metal mount, blah, blah
First one mentions 'minor signs of use', but good condition, others claim mint condition, clean glass. The usual

Andy
