EDIT: see post further down for answer. :)

I just won an auction for a metal mount 50 1.8. Does it use the same hood as the mkII? I see hoods for the mkII all over the place, but can't find any info on the mkI.
Thanks! http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

How about getting a screw on rubber hood? B&H has them, they work and inexpensive.

Thanks for the idea. The price is definitely right, but my experience has been that if I'm not paying attention, I get vignetting when the hood bends in. The added protection and a hood that doesn't mount on the fiter screw would be nice as well.
After a bit more searching, I'm getting some conflicting reports on the es-65 III fitting. Anyone with experience on this particular hood?

Well, after a lot of digging, I found the answer to my own question. I'll leave it here for those that are interested:
The "approved" original hood is the (of course) dicontinued ES-65. Current users state that the ES-65 III works just as well. Apparently the III model has a flocked interior. Also very interesting to note is that the ET-65 III works too, even without vignetting. I don't know if this user tried it on film or digital, but it should work at least on digital. I plan to get the ET, so I'll report back on this.
A little explaination I learned on the naming conventions:
>> "E" is for EOS lenses. All EOS hoods start with "E"
>> Next character is "W", "S", or "T", for wide, standard, or tele, respectively. This generally indicates length of the hood.
>> The number indicates inner diameter of the mount.
>> The number can be followed by a letter ("A", "B", "C", etc). This indicates variations, and they are not necessarily compatible with each other.
>> Finally, a "mark" number, "II" or "III". This indicates updates or revisions. These should be compatible, but YMMV.

Well, I finally got around to ordering the ET-65 III hood on Amazon.com. Goog thing I waited too...it went to super-saver free shipping, so I only paid $24 for it.
It fits nicely, and no vignetting at all. If you want your hood to snap on backwards while the Mk I is fitted to your camera, this isn't your hood. You'll want the discontinued ES- 65 (I've seen these on ebay recently). The ET-65 III is slightly longer than the lens itself.
I don't have pics right now, but hopefully soon I can post some.

Here are some pics mounted on my Rebel S II. They're not real great, but these are my first "still life" shots, so please bear with me. :o
