Ok here is the deal I have been reading different post on the con's and pros of using a filter. I just bought a Canon 70-200 L F4. I want to protect this lens call me a cheap skate but almost $100 for a Super Mulit Coated UV filter is crazy. And as far as UV filters go UV filter are not supposed to eliminate any reflection at all, only to reduce the amount of UV rays reaching the sensor so if this is not a problem why pay $40 for a UV filter. Are clear glass filters available just for protection no fancy UV just pain glass that won't effect the lens quality??? Is there a diffrence between a Hoya HMC and the Hoya Super HMC. Would you be able to tell the diffrence???

Putting a cheap non-coated filter on is a bit like putting tiger stripe, nylon seat covers on leather car seats. You have paid for top quality but the result is compromised.

If your cheap filter taints the light before it gets to the expensive lens elements, the damage has been done. It is generally agreed that you should either not use one, or use the best that you can afford. The more expensive the lens, the more that holds true.

The multi-resistant coatings help protect the surface and reduce reflections and flare.

Probably not what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

You can find Hoya Pro 1 HMC filters on EBAY from Asia for under 50 dlls shipped. BH sells them for almost 100 dlls.

just use the lens hood. if your outside it will increase you shot quality anyway. I know its easy to say just be careful and you won't have to worry about it. But the lens hood has saved my glass many times.

use the hood and take care as I know you already do.

I no longer use a Canon brand UV filter on my 75-300 IS USM, the results with this lens turn out much-much better without the filter.

It may be just in my head but it also appears my AF works better without the filter, given that result likely will not use such filters in the future.

Just be careful with L, and use a hood you should be ok.

Another vote to forget the UV filter as protection. A good lens hood, used all the time, is all the protection you'll need if you take care of your equipment (and sometimes even if you don't).

In my book, there's only one use for a UV filter. That is using it as a support for vaseline or something like it to blur the outer edges of a photo.

Ditto...
UV filters are like condoms, you only put one on if you need it :-)
If you are shooting in dust or rainy conditions then the added protection if needed, if not why bother.

Well hoods are usefull but if you still want a UV filter go for B+W they make some of the best filters around which isnt a surprise when you know they are made by schneider. Yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for and if you have a great lense then you need a great filter.. theres my 2 pence :)
