Hello,

New to photography, I've had my camera about 7 months now. I'm starting to find an interest in photographing action figures. I thought I might want to photograph action figures still in the package and loose (out of the package) figures, but the more and more I see others photos, I think I like the "art" of photographing them loose, no package.

So I'd like to start a thread here so we can post some of our action figures or small toys and share the setups used such as light tents etc, and of course the lighting and flashes...I'm hoping to learn how to best photograph the toys I want, and use techniques learned here.

So please start sharing some examples, and feel free to share pics and info of your setups too, very important to us trying to learn, and since I'm visual, pictures of the setup are awesome.

I've purchased some foam core boards and other stuff to make a DIY light box, but was also considering buying this...think this would give me some good results with the action figures and toys?

Thanks!

THis particular reason is why I buy mint figure loose without package. Because I'll tear it anyway ;) and it gives discount. Anyway I like spawn and x-men figure, but for the price I'd rather save it for my camera gear for now. I only own 2 figures as of now, a wolverine and spawn 95i, 12 and 6 inch respectively.

I've shot both of them, which is here (http://eduardj.deviantart.com/art/Hell-Spawn-ii-123300394), here (http://eduardj.deviantart.com/art/Spawn-BW-121852459), and here (http://eduardj.deviantart.com/art/X-Men-Wolverine-121849996). Just a link though cause it just hurt people eyes to post it here. :)

For the setup it's just plain back velvet and 50 watt fluorescent table lamp. But the background is lighter than my liking, because I don't gobo'd it or put the velvet far enough to control light spill, which makes some pattern in the background. I forgot the setup tho, because it's continuous light so I just use live view and take my time to see the result. The result is not that good for me, but considering that I did it long before I know light theory and such, I think it's pretty decent.

Chris, I ordered a light tent and light stands last week. They should be out for delivery today. Hold off on ordering yours until I get a chance to test mine out. From all I have seen and been reading, if you have the space for it, [which I do not], then the foam core boards and a large table top will be just as effective as any light tent, maybe more so. In fact, if I had had the space, I would have gone that way first. Also check out a couple of new links in that other thread, near the end. There is a site link that has tutorials on jewlery and other small object photography using light tents that explains how to in detail and has lot's of pictures.

Eduard, you are too hard on yourself. If those are before you learned about light, then your a natural at this. :)

Mitch,

Which tent and light stands and lights did you buy? Links?
I'll wait and see what you think of yours. I found a decent 36" light tent on ebay for $22 and free shipping, might be worth it for that deal, I'm excited to get to try these out on my toys!

Buy one of those pop-up tents on eBay, buy an under-the-cabinet kitchen light, and that's all you need. Depending on what type of final results you're looking for, illuminating from the top of the box with the kitchen fluorescent light will be enough to keep shadows to a minimum, and you'll get even light through the whole box. To keep corner shadows away, you can put pieces of white paper in the corners, and you can also use the paper as reflectors.

If you have a flash or two, experiment with shooting them through the sides of the box. There are plenty of ways to illuminate a light box. Here are a few shots I took with one of those eBay lightbox kits. I don't use the lights that came with it, I use an 18" under-the-cabinet light or one or two flash units...

These were lit by the kitchen light sitting on top of the lightbox...

Not action figures, but they will give you an idea of what you can do with different lighting. Action figures will be a bit harder because they'll have little nooks and such that will give shadows, and you'll have to learn how to pose both the figure and the light to get the best look. However, all it takes is a decent lightbox and some light aimed the right way, and you're all set. After getting the setup, it's just a matter of practice until you get the look you want.

I bought this kit from Amazon (http://www.cowboystudio.com/product/c10/p10-17.php), because on christmas day, I got a $100 gift certificate from one of my clients, that I wasn't expecting. So I spent it on something I had been wanting.

I bought this cause I do not have a lot of extra space here to set up a large spread or use individual sheets of foam for reflectors. It would just take up too much room I don't have, while this thing folds down into a small carry case. And I might use it as a portable light tent also.

Believe me though, if I did not live in a trailer, and had plenty of room, I would probably have gone with foam boards, all kinds of stands, sawhorses and other stuff that might make the job easier. :)

Anyway, yours is a good price, but still wait. I am sure you want a tent with a close up front and an opening top. If you checked out that link in the other thread, they are selling one that has inside the tent hangers built in that might come in very handy. So hold on and see how mine functions before you spend money you might regret. Mine is out for delivery today. :)

But for sure, I am very excited to get started on learning about light and composition. It's been too cold to go out and dark grey skies even if it wasn't and I am getting real bored. Anyway, when it gets here, I will let you know my first impressions. ;)

Thanks katodog, nice shots! I actually will be buying an ebay light tent/box soon, and already purchased two cheap shop flood lights from Home Depot and a couple of CF lights, not sure if they are a good light bulb or not, they are the "daylight" labeled ones, rated as the 100w equivilant or 5500k, think those are good?

katodog
4th of January 2010 (Mon), 10:03
Yes. Any "Daylight" bulb will work. The only thing you need to do is decide how much light you want, 100 watt will put out more light than 60 watt, obviously, and you might find that 60 watt daylight bulbs are bright enough in the lightbox. Of course, it's best to use the higher wattage, because it will give you the best light for exposure and ISO values.

As long as you can shine the light through the sides and top of the box, you should be all set. If you want to see what different light does, buy a regular incandescent bulb and a "Cool White" or "Warm White" bulb and shoot with them. You'll see a difference in color tones and white balance with the different bulbs, and you'll find that the "Daylight" bulbs put off the best light.

Thanks Mitch and katodog, I like that kit you bought Mitch. Can't wait to see pics of it setup and some results, will hold off till then before I purchase a kit.

I'll experiement with what I bought already, and glad to hear I pickd the right light bulbs.

Katodog, mind to share what's the background you use, particularly the black one?
I'm curious because it stays dark even when you lit it directly without no reflection whatsoever.

katodog

This is the box I bought (http://cgi.ebay.com/Photo-Studio-Lighting-Light-Box-Tent-Photography-LS06_W0QQitemZ390136159193QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_De faultDomain_0?hash=item5ad5ed5bd9), the backgrounds came with the lightbox. It's kinda soft on one side, and smooth on the other. I always shoot with the soft side so light gets absorbed and keeps shadows down. The shots I posted are a bit deceptive though, because I processed to darken the entire image and get the background totally black. The background material picks up a lot of lint and it's a pain in the neck to clean it. I haven't tried throwing it in the washer, but I would imagine it would be okay in there.

However, even with a few lint and dust spots, it's pretty black, and makes it easy to work with under different lighting. Here's a few images of the typical setup for a black background shoot. As you can see, certain angles will show it not to be totally flat black, but it's easy to work out in processing. You can also see how I use the cabinet light to illuminate the box...

My tent came with the same sweeps in black and white. It's very strong nylon on one side and some kind of felt on the other, with velcro tabs sewn on to mount it inside the tent. the bad thing is, it's came folded and it looks like I will need to buy a steemer to get it flat again.

I will check out the art supply stores for long pieces of construction paper that will fit the tent also. Might be easier, comes in more colors and there won't be any lint problem. :)

Thanks, maybe that's why there is some part of the knife and gun that go black and blend to the background. I've using velvet but with strong light it usually becomes gray and like yours, it caught lots of lint. Btw just go to your local diy store, and find some lint rollers. It basically is a rolled sticky paper that you roll to the fabric and remove the lint.

katodog,

Thanks for the link to your kit, I think I might have found something I will buy.
I already bought some cheap shop lights and CF bulbs, just curious on why some people choose the box vs. the tents/cubes etc...

I'm thinking now, looking at that ebay store this might be what I need;

Now I just need to learn more about using the lighting I have. ;)

I've purchased some foam core boards and other stuff to make a DIY light box, but was also considering buying this...think this would give me some good results with the action figures and toys?

Light tents are good for producing an even lighting of your subject. While they are good at doing that, I find it difficult to do any more interesting with the light in one of those. Furthermore, adding background et c. is limited to what you can actually fit into the box so creativity is a bit restricted.

I'd stick with the foamcore and other types of diy reflectors to shape the light around your figure.

An example of my setup is attached A set of pvc pipes is used as scaffolding to string up background, figures and reflectors. Here I used two naked flashes for lighting. The image on the right was taken with this particular setup (though its far from the best in the set). The shot is unprocessed so the strings are still visible

With this setup, I have plenty of space for placing lights and reflectors wherever i wish.

I got my light box but they didn't send me the light bulbs or backdrops. Had to email them and they've since shipped those out to me. Just waiting now.

Ok, I got the bulbs and the backdrops now, the back drops have all those same creases some of you have seen, did you iron them out? Another thing my light box is a 25" cube, but the back drops are only 20" wide, shouldn't they be 25" wide as well to cover the entire back of the cube?

My backdrops are not quite as wide as my 30" tent, but close. I never did get all the wrinkles out of mine. I did hang them in the bathroom and steamed up the room using the hot shower. It helped, but could have been better. I like the idea of putting them in the dryer for a few minutes with a wet cloth, but be careful of lint. Once it gets on that felt, it won't come out.

I tried it myself with these ones sent, and it didn't do much, waste of time.
I'm going to iron them next, using something between them and the iron.

Well since the backdrops that came with it are still all folded and creased, I used a piece of white poster board, curved it in the back there, works like it should yes.

Here are a few more I tried out tonight, with some black poster board as the backdrop...not crazy about what I'm getting, I still need lots of practice.
And when my backdrops come in, and I don't have 2" on the sides where the backdrop doesn't cover up...I'll be better.

You are using a tripod? My recommendation is to get out of Av Mode and go to Manual. F/5 and f/8 at ISO 800 simply isn't going to cut it. That's why so much of the figure is out of focus. You need at least ISO 16, maybe more, and shoot at ISO 100 for the best quality. That's the whole purpose of a tent. If it takes 3-4 seconds of shutter speed, doesn't matter, they aren't moving. :)

Nope, I'm doing this hand held, just to see what I can do. I will try it at f/16 and ISO 100 on the tripod. Will post results once I do.

I'm still new to this myself, but I have discovered that even if the studio lighting looks fairly bright, it can't hold a candle to daylight. Tripods are a must and long shutter speeds are your friend.

Also, if you haven't figured it out, turn off the TV, your desk lamp behind you and all other lights in the room and use only the tent lights. Took me a few days to figure that out. :)

Nice work. Is that the 100mm Macro the new L or just the previous version?
Been trying to decide between the two...and can't make up my mind.

I have the older 100mm macro (non-L version). From what I have read the new L series 100mm macro is good but the IS not quite there yet. Not a great value for your $.

100mm L Macro Review (http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_100_2p8_is_usm_c16/)

As for manual settings: 1/160sec, f/11, ISO 100. 580ex set to 1/16th power (or something close) positioned upper right with no diffuser and i used a piece of cardboard to shield the light from spilling onto the background. I also used two pieces of white cardboard as bounce cards, placed to the left and front left of the figures. The cardboard pieces were about the size of a comic book and came with a drawer box i have for my comics. Comic boards also work well for bounce cards and are more reflective than the cardboard used in these shots.

Awesome explanation there, I just wished I could see that visually setup and it would make more sense to me, any way to snap a pic of that setup? I'm so visual, it would just make more sense to see it.
I can kind of visualize it, but to see the actual boards in place, would be awesome.

Also, I see you have a few L's yourself, you don't think the 100mm macro L is worth an upgrade at this point?

I did use a tripod, mainly to keep my framing consistent but it was not really necessary with the shutter speeds i was using.

I did break down my set up last night but if I end up taking more shots like this soon I can easily snap a pic for you.

As far as upgrading to the 100mm L, that's a tough call. I'm happy with the sharpness of my lens, and for the amount I use it I'm not sure that the jump up to the L version is worth the price difference. I considered upgrading initially because of the IS but after reading that the IS does not perform as well as expected at macro distances I don't see the point. Maybe someone who has used the L version can chime in...

While they are saying the IS doesn't perform "that" well at macro distances, they are saying its great in "portriat" distances, which I'll use just as much if not more, that would be my selling point to go L or not, I suppose.

This is where I would use my 70-200mm. It's a personal choice. I'm sure the quality of the lens is great, as are all Canon L's. If it works for you, I say go for it. To be honest, if/when I see my way clear financially, there is a good chance it will end up in my bag.

Hopefully we can get some more good pics of our dollies, I know these Tim Burton figures are turning out kick butt!

So I decided to take more pics tonight.

Here is the set up.
Typically I've been holding the cardboard piece being used to direct the light from the flash by hand, but for the purpose of these set up pics I taped it to the flash.

Realize that this is just trial and error until you achieve the desired results.

Thanks mCm, those pics of the setup are soooooo helpful! I thank you so much, now I can put your text description to visual picture and I totally get and see what you're doing there. You don't even have a light box, just the off camera flash coming from up top right? You are shooting with all the other lights off right?

I can make this same setup, or get close and try and error and see what kind of look I get, only problem is I don't have a way to shoot my flash off camera yet, guess I could use a constant light source from the same angle right? Oh the other issue is I don't have the macro lens either...bummer, but I guess I could get pretty close with my 24-70...will test it out and see what I get.

What wireless flash setup are you using? Pocket Wizards?

Actually, the room lights were on when these pictures were taken. Seems that the flash setting I'm using is overpowering the ambient light.

You can always buy a long sync cord (link below) for your flash instead of laying out the $ for pocketwizards. I'm not sure a constant light source would provide enough light, but you could use a slower shutter speed or hinger ISO.

LINK: 10m sync cord (http://shop.ebay.com/nice.photo/m.html?_nkw=10m+ttl+canon&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3911.m270.l1313&_odkw=10m+ttl+canon&_osacat=0)

PocketWizard info is in my sig.

If you want to try out a macro lens prior to purchasing go here --> LENSRENTALS.COM (http://www.lensrentals.com/category/macro-and-specialty/for-canon) They were cheaper than borrowlenses.com for the 100mm and the same price on the 100mmL.

I thought about renting both the L Macro and non L macro but figured it was like $100, which would be a lot towards the non L if I chose not to get the L version. That and I don't know that I would get time to "try them out"...when I rent them, better to just buy one and live with it and use it in my own time.

How do you like your Pocketwizard setup? It looks a lot better than a corded setup, less hassle. I will check out your pocket wizard stuff online.

Where are you getting your Tim Burton toys? Are they Side Show figures?

I've only been using the PocketWizards for a short time but they have been great so far. Sure they are less hassle than a corded set up but also about $350 more expensive. If you are just looking to use off camera flash in a studio type setting then a 30' cord should do the trick but i can't argue that having the ability to go wireless is not beneficial at times.

The small Tim Burton figures are part of the Tragic Toys line. They are pvc figures about 3" tall and are sold in 3 packs. There is a Tim Burton exhibit at the MoMa currently and I noticed these figures are being sold there. Otherwise your best bet is to check local comic shops. Jack and Sally are part of the Walt Disney Showcase Collection.

I've been reading about issues with them at longer distances, and I don't really plan to use them right now at a long distance, but other than that, have you had any issues?

I mainly want to use it for similar situations to like what you have setup. Just a few feet away...etc...I guess the 580EXII and these have some issue with signal interference.

One example:

I've read the same but I have not had any triggering issues and have even fired the flash out of sight and from different rooms. I took them from the box, set them on the camera and flash, turned to channel C2 and started shooting. I've shot as high as 1/500 maybe faster with no issues. Never read any manual, etc. Maybe I'm lucky...who knows.

ChrisMc73
21st of January 2010 (Thu), 09:06
Yeah I think, from that blog article I posted, the issues are seen at higher shutter speeds, above 1/500...so maybe if you tried going above that and doing what you did, out of sight etc...might see some? Those seem like very unique situations anyway.

Before you buy a Canon 100 Macro, take a look at the Sigma 105. You can buy one cheap in the Sell forum, and even new they are way cheaper than Canon. Slower to focus, but almost every macro lens is slow. Still, the image quality is exceptional. And it works great as a longer lens too, as seen by the two Villa Louis Carraige Classic and MotoX links in my footer, all shot with the 105.

Thanks for the advice, and don't get me wrong or take offense, but I'm kind of picky about my gear. I am not 100% against buying Sigma, Tamron, etc...but I just love Canon stuff, and its worth it to me to buy the Canon brand, unless I'm just totally sold on something else that Canon doesn't offer. At this point my goal is to make my lens collection L's where I can. I just love their IQ, just call me picky...or dumb, or whatever, its how I feel. Thanks.

Just an FYI, I bought this one...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390104127989

And I'm not saying it was a bad purchase, cause their customer service fixed all issues, but the thing came in without the bulbs and without the backdrops. I emailed them, and customer service shipped them out the next day 2-3 days later got them, and the backdrops were the 20" size, not the correct 25" sized ones that should have come with it and one of the bulbs, while packed well, was broken (probably a UPS issue there). Emailed them again, and they sent the right sized backdrops and a new light bulb. So after about two weeks, I finally have it all here and up and working. Its a great little setup, can't complain. If you are handy at all though, you could make a setup like this and save some money. I'm not very hobby or handy, so I chose to buy and have it all here and ready to unpack and go, and it would have been had I not had all the other issues.

That company seems to be the only one one ebay selling the kit like mine, and again the customer services was great, so while I warn, I also praise them.

Get to it and add to this thread! I want to see more Action Figures!

Well since I just now got all my stuff for the kit finally, I haven't had a lot of chances to shoot my stuff, that and my photography class assignments have been to do something other than what this kind of photography lends itself to. I will get my setup back up this week and play with some more and post some samples. I need to iron out my back drops as the creases in them when folded up and shipped really do hurt the use of them.

I've been using a cut-up cardboard box with a hole cut at the top for the lamp. and white posterboard on the sides and back of the box. Certainly not the most ideal setup since it made the lighting a little bit harder to correct. I need to go out and get some white fabric and make a better one.

Anyway here are a few I took using that setup with Canon XSi + 18-55mm IS kit lens.

First 2 are not original vintage. They are part of the "Masterpiece" collection from Japan and stand around 12" tall. Really articulate (not bricks).

2nd to last is from Bandai's Metal Material Model Gundam line.

last one is Battle Fever Robo from Bandai's Soul of Chogokin line.

I have a lot more, but haven't gotten around to shooting them all yet. Here's a link to some pictures of what I currently have, but I really want to go back and re-shoot a lot of them, and add the rest of my collection when I get around to it.

I used an LED flashlight held above the figure and circled him with the light. I never let the beam touch the figure, just the areas directly around it. You can tell where the beam hit as it causes a sort of halo effect on the backdrop. The light spilling off the flashlight was enough to light the figure and achieve this look. Out of about 15-20 attempts, this was the shot I liked the best. It's basically impossible to take the same shot twice.

And a couple that are less twee. These two are about actual size in this pic:

And a sculpt I knocked up from a doodle some years back. Again life size:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/2593400991_2aa0f4e4aa_b.jpg

The main issue I face with these things is getting soft, diffused and even lighting. Shadow and harsh highlights are unwanted as they tend to mask the paintjob. Always meant to buy a ring flash but never got around to it. I make do with a random assortment of homemade tents, tracing paper and bits of card to bounce light back into the models.

I'd love to have a crack at repainting those Halo figs. The local comic shop has only got the dodgy aliens left (can't remember what they're called - the ones that use the big lightsabery axey bladey thingummys...) and I don't like 'em. Got to love that Spartan armour though. Could do a reet job weathering that...

Also need to do some proper pics of these on a blue or green screen:

Sorry. I've returned my inner nerd back whence it came :D

Nice stuff! I get my Halo figures off Amazon - Incognito Comics (no connection other than satisfied customer) are very good at sourcing stuff!

Yeah, all Japanese stuff. I wish I had an awesome display. I probably only have 1/10th of it displayed in 1 IKEA Detolf case. Wife doesn't like toys everywhere...

I haven't even posted up my good stuff yet, as I haven't gotten around to taking pictures of them.

Most of these pictures were taken back when I had the Canon s50 P&S. Some with the Rebel XTi. I've gotten a lot better since then. I'll try to get around to continue taking pix of my collection again.

Alright, I have them here. I only use two large white boards as background. Shot with only a 580EX II attached to the body. I could have cropped them, but they're the original before cropping for print. That's what I usually do when I don't feel like to go anywhere and want to shoot something.

Asakura Ryoko from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Nendoroid (Good Smile Company). This expression (please ;)) is my favorite out of the two included.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/madbikes/IMG_1844.jpg

Miku Miku Kagame from Lucky Star OVA by Nendoroid (Good Smile Company). This is one of the cutest from their line-up in my opinion. In the OVA Kagame cosplay as Hatusne Miku, a very popular Vocaloid voice synthesizer character, for a very brief moment.

Suzumiya Haruhi (knight version) from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Figma (Max Factory, also under Good Smile Company). This is their very first figure bundled with the second Haruhi game. I was amazed at the details when I first saw it and its height is tall enough that I can live with. So I bought the bundle. The game itself is pretty cool. It's a RPG where you're in charge on a 4-week schedule to make a game. There are 6 different games you can make out of it where one of it is a very simple Dungeons & Dragon game. Haruhi is a knight in that very game.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/madbikes/IMG_1876.jpg

Izumi Konata (Cosplay version) from Lucky Star by Figma (Max Factory). This is their first limited-production figure if you don't count the Haruhi one. Konata cosplay as Haruhi in episode 16 in the anime.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/madbikes/IMG_1903.jpg

Tsuruya-san (Maid Cafe version) from Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya by Figma (Max Factory). She's quite a hyper girl in the anime. This is her dressed as a maid as her class transformed into a maid cafe during their school festival. There's a 1/8 scale version of this, but I want something a little smaller. I wished Figma will make one and they did. This expression actually doesn't fit in this figure as the "front hair" part is not interchangeable with the original school uniform version. You will only notice it in person so it's all good.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/madbikes/IMG_1889.jpg

Seto San from Seto no Hanayome by Figma (Max Factory). I like her personality in the anime. Somehow the other characters are not popular enough for anyone to make a figure although the anime pretty funny. The only downside to this figure is the head doesn't have enough degrees of freedom to move for a good pose sometimes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v455/madbikes/IMG_1887.jpg

She is a mermaid in the anime. That's about the best I can make a good pose out it given its degrees of freedom in posing.

Lighting is via off camera cabled 550ex (which I got before I got my own DSLR).
Not my figures, all painted by a mate who has a big collection:

I do have a big collection of Transformers though, mostly from the new series, but some older stuff as well including G1 from when I was old a kid.
Next time I put up the light tent for some product work I'll have to take some photos of them instead of playing with....

The Darth Vader with the Stormtrooper helmet in the back is my favorite of your Darth shots.
