The flag raising and cemetery picture were taken this past Memorial Day in Washington's Crossing Park in Pa. In this memorial overlooking the Delaware River 21 young men ill dressed with little to eat died of exposure Christmas Eve. The Following morning Washington Crossed the Delaware and on to victory at Trenton. Many historians mark this victory as a turning point in the Revolutionary war.
I was moved by this historical setting and reminded of the responsibility of our surviving generations to pass down to our progeny the duty to honor and respect the sacrifices of those that gave their lives in all wars so that we may live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

the flag shot 1/1000 f8 iso400, 55mm; head stone with father daughter 1/100 f10 iso400, at 84mm
no post processing done, however both shots had a bit of croping.

Did I get my point across? technically I could get more detail in child shoulder, and head stone. I am still troubled by poor auto focus of xsi kit len.

I like #2 - even it being a bit soft. It tells the story.
In #1 (also OOF) I miss the "stars" (top of the flag). I think that really should have been in the shot even if you cannot get the whole flagpole.

Why not try something other than auto? Give another setting a try;)

the kit lens should auto focus just fine.

Yes definately out of focus on both.
Have you tried manual focus?
Don't think it is a case of wrong focus point selected as no part of either image appear in focus and i does not look like motion blur.

Do you only have the one lens? perhaps you borrow another for a test shot or two, could be a bad lens or focus sensor fault in the body, it does happen.
