I've got that lens, and I like it very much. It's the only zoom I still use, and it takes decent pictures. I sometimes wish for more wide angle (e.g. 10-22 EF-S) but for a 17-35mm lens it's really good, especially for $395.
I also have a Sigma 17-35 which cost $550 in 2002, and it doesn't hold a candle to the Tamron.
Hope this helps,
Tim

I've heard its a really good lens, nice and wide too. 2.8 is also very good, for 395 id say gor for it.

go to fred miranda and check out the reviews. after rebates i am into my 17-35 $450 so i think the deal is excellent.
you'll hear some people say that the 17-35 focusses slow but i don't think that's much of an issue with a WA lens.

I just bought a used copy of the lens. It was too good to pass up and I had heard good things about the lens. I have only had it on the 10D for a few minutes, but I am looking forward to really testing it this week.

Willg,
You do realize that Tamron defines "student" as someone enrolled in a college level photography class. You have to have the photography class instructor sign the form. A lot of camera stores won't have any idea what you are talking about when you show up with the form to order your lens. The 17-35 is a good lens - watch the backlighting - otherwise, it's good.

As far as image quality is concerned, the Tamron 17-35 f2.6-4 is as good, if not better, than the Canon 17-40mm f4 L USM.

The quality is in the same ballpark as the 17-40L and the added 2.8 makes this lens a winner !!
