That looks a little soft to me.

Yeah, I agree. A bit soft. Maybe you can increase the contrast a bit and use a little unsharp mask. It's a great looking flower though. If you can, moving that other flower from behind it would be good. Maybe bend it off to the side a little while you take the shot. Having just the one flower surrounded by green would be better (if possible).

I'm not sure PS is going to save this one. It looks like the focus point was just behind the petals. USM is just going to make that that part sharper. I don't think the other flowers matter much, it comes down to judgement and preference. I would reshoot at a higher f/stop, something that will get the entire flower in the DOF. It may help to use an online DOF calculator (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html). I would also highly reccommend a tripod, and use of fill flash. If you are using a SLR, then Av (Aperture Priority mode) will make all of this easy.

Thanks for your comments jfracho. Guess my focus point was off on this one. I'll have to try shooting at a higher F stop.. Was using my Canon Powershot A75.. Would love to be able to afford a proper DSLR but its not gonna be in the near future.. Did make me wish i had my Pentax K1000 with me instead of leaving it at the flat.. Ohhh well. We are never totally happy eh?:-).
Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Was using my Canon Powershot A75Now that I know that, is it possible that you may have been just a few inches too close? Check the minimum focus distance, before fiddling with the aperture. I gave my parents an A85 as a present back in April, so I have some experience with a similar model, and I can confirm that you should be able to take a great flower shot with your A75. That series is a useful bunch of cameras. You can take a look at my friend's site (http://erteng.smugmug.com/2005), he uses an A95. Good luck, and repost the results.

Aye i have gotten some good results with my A75 and to be honest i don't remember how close i was.. But it is quite possible i was too close. Here is a link to one of my other flower pics which i think came out quite well if i do sayso myself :-)
