Ive seen shots in here from the sigma 105 and the canon 100 macro,s they are both very sharp lenses and about the same price give or take a few £,s is one worth having more than the other for any reason as i carn,t make my mind up
thanks
Rob.

If there is no real difference in price (really!?) then I would get the Canon if buying new. Resale is likely to be better. However, if you check 7dayshop then you will find the difference is £90 in favour of the Sigma. You'll know the pros and cons from the recent Macro threads on this forum. The 150mm Sigma is £379.

Ah, if only that was so Rob
Sorry, but you're looking at the 200mm and should be looking at the second entry, the 200mm Macro.
Maybe that makes it a no brainer.

I have the Tamron 90mm f2.8 and it is also great for portraits. It is rated to be as good as the Canon 100 but at a lower price.

I love the Canon 100 f2.8 Macro. Amazing lens and on my camera 75% of the time. I love my 70-200mm too but the Macro keeps it off!

The 'older' sigma 105 EX macro was not as good as the canon -or at the very least had varying quality control.
Notice how average the sigma looks in this test.

My experiences with both lenses were very similar to that test. The canon is close to as good as it is possible for a lens to get (!!) while the sigma was just 'average sharp'.
The newest sigma (the DG version) looks to be much better :)

Ron is perfectly correct and even though I have the new and improved 105mm DG Sigma, and love it, I would have the Canon if I wasn't so tight fisted. I just didn't feel it was £140 better at the time (I got a great deal on my Sigma!) If you can aford it then the Canon or Sigma 150mm are top of the tree.
