INSPIRE the "photographer on a budget" who can't afford dedicated macro lenses...
Please post what you consider to be your best macro shot(s) using the 50mm 1.8 lens (with extension tubes is ok). If possible can you post your EXIF data and which extension tubes you used. Or, just post the pic.
Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Not quite what you asked for- these were taken with an old pentax manual 50mm lens on 75mm of ext tubes I cobbled together with a canon Tmount. ISO 100-800, 1/200th ETTL flash, F11

Techuser: Amazing shots! Did you use the 50 1.8 with tubes?

since you have to focus much closer with tubes, if taking waterdrop, is it much difficult? seems like it would splash all over the front of lens?

5. Tiny flower, grows in clusters (think a tiny bunch of grapes). Photo is uncropped, almost 1:1.

I shot that on my first days with the DSLR and I didnt had the tubes yet, used just the DCR250, the distance was around 10cm I think, the front element was safe
robertnzana I did just some tests after I bought the tubes but never got to try them in the field, using the close-up on my 18-55 gives up pretty much the same results and is more practical without having to put the tubes on

Those shots with water droplets on the flowers, etc...I assume those are setup shots? Where you drop water on the flower prior to taking the shot?

/looks at the photos posted
me?
If you are referring to my pictures, none of them are setup. Number 1 and 3 were taken just at my apartment complex. Number 1 was after it had rained and number 3 and 4 was before sunset at 28 degrees f (so not much much water had evaporated from overnight condensation)
Number 2 and 5 were taken at an arboretum.
All shots were handheld except for number 1 which I used a tripod.
If you are not referring to me, just ignore this post =)

themadman: I was referring to you and those shots are excellent! Now that I have gotten a few shots under magnification with my new gear I can see how those shots are possible. Still, it isn't a beginners game...baby steps for me! I am practicing getting correct lighting where I want it and adjusting the DOF to get the shot I want.
I am still interested in focus stacking and finding the best program for my MacBook Pro.

It is hard to take pictures of bugs with a small working distance like 50mm with tubes. Maybe bait the bee with some food of some kind?

These were with a Pentax f/1.7 lens with a manual aperture ring converted to a canon fit and mounted on cheapo £5 ebay tubes, lit with a 430ex mounted on the hotshoe with a stofen attached.
The hardest part of this setup is that setting the manual aperture past f/8 makes the viewfinder very dark so there's quite a few missed focus shots, but that's part of the fun of it!

Great thread!
All taken with the 50mm f/1.8 II + 68mm of ext tubes and a 1.4x TC on the 50D
These are all shots of minute sections of my wife's glass (She forms hollow balls as part of a process for making beads and I photograph them ;) )>
