View Full Version : I'm Confused -- RAW + JPG Shooting -- Help!

Greetings everyone. As you can see from my sig, I own two cameras at the moment, a G10 PS and an XSi DSLR. Both have the option to shoot raw and JPG at the same time. I'm having two problems here. First, I can't seem to find both the cr2 files and the jpgs in the same place (after a download to the computer, it appears only cr2 raws have downloaded). Second, I'm not sure how the jpgs are being recorded, nor whether it's worth bothering. For me, I'd prefer the advantages of raw, unless: 1) I need to disseminate many exposures in a hurry, 2) I can have creative control over the jpgs (such as preselected WB, or the special modes like aquarium, night portrait, fireworks, etc.). When I set either camera to RAW + jpg, I can't tell what the camera might be doing in processing the jpg part of the formula.

I hope I'm not missing something obvious. Any assistance will be most welcome.

How are you downloading? I shoot nothing but RAW + Small JPEG (except on the SX1 which only does R+L and the JPEG-only A630). I use a card reader and Downloader Pro for downloads, which lets me tag each photo file name with the camera used along with the usual tagging and geotagging.

Awkwardly.

With the XSi, I download images via the DPP software to an external HDD. I usually then use the DPP batch processing to convert the raw images to a batch of jpgs in my on-board "my pictures" directory. For whatever reason, the computer and software don't see the G10 the same way. I have to connect it, which seems to do nothing. That said, I can see it and use the "explore" option in the DPP software. I then use the "explore" option to do essentially the same thing I described for the XSi. In neither instance does either the software "see" the jpgs that are supposedly being captured with the raws.

I don't use DPP but try using eos utility to download the files.

Try using Zoom Browser to download.
I use that and it shows both the CR2 and JPEG files side by side. I then save the Raw files to a CD and ext hard Drive before processing in DPP.

Was one of the first things I saw when got mine
If I open in explorer it shows two CR2 files, if I'm not mistaken there was no problem with a card reader though
Any of the software that comes with the camera wont work on my computer, so... now or I dont shoot raw + jpg or download from them lightroom (which comes correctly)

Well, DPP is basically a RAW processor, so I wouldn't expect it to try to copy JPEGs as well. ZB/Eos Utilities should handle the RAW+JPEG download without hassles though. Are you downloading direct from the camera or through a card reader? If you're using a card reader you could just copy the files using Explorer or many other file/photo transfer applications.

In the DPP options menu, there is a checkbox that when clicked, will only show the RAW file if there is both a RAW file and JPEG with the exact same filename. It will put a little symbol on the RAW file thumbnail to indicate that a JPEG is also present. If you want to see both files in DPP, you have to unselect that option (I believe that it is normally unselected by default).

If you go into the folder in windows, do you see both files? If so, that what I described above is definitely what's happening.

For some reason, known only to entities who occupy a higher plane than I, the EOS utiltiy will see only my XSi. As far as it is concerned, my G10 simply does not exist.

I will say this: my WinXP-Pro install is clearly headed for a major crash. I have all my data rigorously backed up, and I'm just waiting for an excuse to reformat and reload. Don't think I'll have to wait long. . . Might go with Win7 -- we'll see. Anyway, it may well be that my malfunctioning Microsoft product (surprise, surprise) is impacting this issue.

Thanks to you, and all the others, for the suggestions.

Thanks. I went to the preferences menu, and found this box. Alas -- it is already unchecked. I'd take that to mean that I should see both the CR2s and the jpgs. Oh well, I'll keep working it.

I'll give that a shot and report back. Thanks.
