View Full Version : Olympic Skiing Selection

I have the opportunity this weekend to shoot the Moguls and Aerials Qualifications for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, with perhaps the potential to go to the VIP area at the base of the hill.
I have never shot sports before.
I have the Rebel XSi and 18-55 and 55-250. I was thinking of getting an extra battery and memory card. I've browsed some of the threads here but none really have gone into skiing photography. I forsee some challenges with overexposure of snow and slow shutter speeds.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do a search for images posted by PRIMOZ - if anyone here knows about shooting skiing it's him. If you're nice he might even lend you his 1DMkIII and 400/2.8 ;)

I dont think he uses the 400 - to heavy for up and down the slopes if I remember corretly
Search his threads... he is top notch with anything involving snow for sure!

Use the 55-250, maybe stop down a notch for sharpness if there is enough light, AI Servo, burst mode, overexpose by about a stop, raise ISO until 1/600 or less is achieved, and fire away.

It's Canada. There's like 50 people there I think. Half of them come from Hong Kong.

you know it. Were having trouble selling tickets for the events because of the penguin infestation at the ice rinks, and the polar bears at the ski hill are a real hassle as well. And theres been a lot of nuisance with the temperature being above freezing lately cause all of our igloos are melting. Its a real shame, ya know?

I hear they're getting all 50 of you to open your freezers to keep the air cool.

It's a pretty realistic solution, 50 freezers is absolutely enough to cool the second biggest country on earth hahaha but let's be serious, were gonna need and least 100 freezers. LOL :D

That's the Canadian government for you. Always doing things in half measures.
:(
I hear they're going to move the whole country north by 5 metres to make it a little cooler.

Nah... that's just 'cause Harper no longer has a right-wing buddy in the White House: he's got to find some way to distance himself from the left... uhhh south... ummm... you know what I mean...

Dang... I learn something from this forum evey day.
I would've guessed Canada would be smaller than Russia, China, Australia, and India, but it is indeed #2...

Population of the entire country is less than the population of one of our states.

In this neck of the woods any reference to politics and politicians falls under the heading of comedy, which should hopefully make it mod-safe ;)

I own the 55-250 and If I was you I would rent a 70-200 2.4 the 55-250 does not focous fast enough and does not all ways lock on correctly. the 55-250 takes great pictures of still subjects in good light but it not a sports lens at all

You're going to want to shoot a lot faster than 1/600 sec. Try something closer to 1/1250 or 1/2500.

Good thing or bad though...? There, you can drive ten minutes in any direction and find a town or city, here, in the majority of the country, with the exception of Ontario, it's an hour or more to most places. Tiny population, massive land, I'd almost say were better off! Just an opinion don't fry me for that last part hahah
Ps we dont say eh btw
