I've pretty much avoided using the more "point and shoot" settings of the G1, but it occurs to me that their intention is to let the camera know what is important in your picture, and I wonder if any of you have used these settings extensively, and how they worked out. I know that the pan setting sets the focus at the wide-angle hyperfocal distance and can see its uses, and the portrait setting seems to prefer the widest possible aperture, but exactly how the other settings work, and how they might work to my advantage, is somewhat unclear to me. Does portrait mode, for instance, somehow "encourage" the camera to focus on things close up, and landscape do the reverse?
Also unclear is the difference between "Auto" and "P." I've been using P right along, but now I wonder if there are some types of shooting situations that would benefit from choosing Auto instead. I know there are things you can't choose to do in Auto, but are there also advantages?
Thanks -
