When I download a picture from my memory card to the computer the pictures look way darker than on the lcd screen

I have a Digital rebel xt

Ive already tried adjusting the brightness on my grahics card and the monitor but if I go any brighter everythinng gets washed out. Does anyone know what the problem is?

get one printed at your lab or on your printer...whatever you are going to print most, and adjust your monitor to look like that print. make sure you are in a bright enough room to see the print though. you could also run adobe gamma to calibrate your screen

I believe even the manual tells you not to use the LCD screen on the camera as a measure of what your picture looks like. Use the histogram...and try to calibrate your monitor.
