With max JPG resolution and set to 100 ISO I get 260 pictures on my Sandisk 1 GB CF card.
On a 2 GB CF card wiht the same settings I get 530 pictures.
These are the numbers shown on the counter from your camera after in camera format.
Buth because not all pictures are equally big (depends on the subjects) it is possible to get more or less pictures on your card(s).

With JPEG + RAW I get ~ 157 pictures on my 2 GB Sandisk CF card.

Here's a post that might be a little easier to understand. There are all at ISO 200, as your ISO goes up you'll fit fewer images on a card, maybe 20 fewer at a guess.
- If you shoot JPG you'll fit about 500 images on a 2GB card.
- If you shoot RAW you'll fit about 219 images on a 2GB card.
- If you shoot RAW+JPG you'll fit around 150 images on a 2GB card.
For 1GB divide by 2.

That's the least useful post i've seen in a while. Image size varies hugely with a DSLR, depending on the scene, the ISO, and the shooting mode (RAW/JPG/both).

Just wondering, but isn't the answer to this in the 350 Instruction manual that came with the camera? It is for the 20D, right on page 47. For the 20D you can get 27 Raw images on a 256MB card.

I get 235 Raws or 999 Jpeg pics on 2GB. Is 999 the max pics or is the visible digit just max number in the LCD?

999 is just the maximum the display can show.
You'll find even when shooting, it will remain at 999 until it estimates it's actually below.
I've always found the estimates are very conservative. I think on a 1Gb card, when empty, it shows 262 images, but generally get 300-550 on a card.

If you can get 999 JPG pictures on a 2 GB CF card then you have not set the JPG
resolution on it's maximum like 303 asked.

For the 350D camera, the answer is on page 53 of the manual.
