Hi folks
Im looking at traveling from Sacramento to LA going through Yosemite on the weekend of Jan 30 - 31. is anybody willing to share weather and driving experience this time of year. I will have a rental car so not sure on the tires.
I will have a jacket since i am coming from Canada but wondering about the drive.

The roads are closed in the high country...Tioga Pass and up to Glacier Point but they keep Yosemite Valley and roads in/out well plowed. Consider renting a 4 wheel drive and ask about having chains on board.
In my opinion, winter in Yosemite is magical and stunning. Enjoy!

Those are beautiful shots. Are they vistas that i can access by road ? Im guessing that i will just have a regular car to rent when i am there.

Yes! The first shot is the called the tunnel view and is Hwy 41 North from Fresno.
The 2nds shot of Half Dome is taken on the Yosemite Valley floor right near Yosemite Falls Lodge. You will see lot's of tripods in that area:)

You've got some funky highlights going on there.
Is it just me, or does everyone else want to see B&W photos of Yosemite as well? Has Ansel really brainwashed us?

Does anybody know what the cost is to buy or rent chains ? I guess i better play it safe so that i dont get turned away. Really looking forward to getting in there. What time should a persone plan on being on location for the best sunrise shots? any preferred locations that anybody is willing to share.

I will be there that weekend too. I've got 4WD and M+S tires, but I'll have to pick up chains too. I hope to get a couple of good shots while I'm out there, thanks for the inspiration Maureen!

Enjoy.... it should be gorgeous after this last week of snow (I heard they got 8 feet!)
We have a reservation in April...we mix it up and go up for a different season each year. :)

A good set of chains at a NAPA or Autozone should cost you around 70-90$. They do sell chains before the west entrance and pretty much all along the west/south entrances at all the little populated places.
Have fun, it is a lovely place in the winter. I have gone there only once so can't give you tips. If you have snow shoes with you, you can generally hike to much better vantage points, or so I have been told.

Make sure you don't drive up 395 to get in from the east side of the park because they close the hwy on that side in the winter. A friend of mine drove that way last year and found out the hard way.
