it depends how much stuff do you have. I got this one and it fits my 20d with grip, flash and 2 lenses and still space for one more lense

I got the Lowepro that came with the accessory package for the 20D. It is pretty good. Lots of room for everything.

I have a LowePro Micro Trekker 200, which is comfortable and very spacious. The waist belt is utterly useless though: I cut it off.

I really like the look of that Canon Digital Gadget 200DG bag but I just got a 20D and I went with a backpack that I bought for $3 at a thrift store. It has plenty of pockets for all the small items and room for the big items and I have added plenty of padding. My reason for the backpack wasn't so much cost savings, but I wanted something that wouldn't look like I was carrying around $2-3,000 worth of equipment. If someone sees me with the camera out then they know I have something worth stealing but if they just see the backpack they probably won't be very tempted.

Frank.

depends on what you want to carry around
I have a camerabag which also turns into a backback - which works well
carries and EOS5, 28-105, 70-300, 135, 50mm 1.8, set 3 extension tubes, exp/flash meter, cokin filters, 10films, book, cloth, pen, very small torch, blower brush, 2spare batts
Thats the kit in the bag.
+ i can expand to a backpack and carry other things
cost about £40 from jessops in UK

I have never understood the argument, about not wanting a backpack that looks like a camera bag.

Most Backpacks, from LowePro, Tamrac, etc: look like regular backpacks. Only a person that knows photography equipment would know they are a camera bag. The above pictured Canon bag sticks out a lot more than a backpack.

I have taken my Tamrac bag many places, through airports, concerts, etc, and everytime I open it up to show security what it is, they are amazed at what is inside, because most backpacks all look the same.

I will say the Crumpler bags, are the most non descriptive camera bags, but they are pricey.

For me, camera bags are like purses for women. Each has a different form and function. I had too many bags and had to get rid of some of them. The 3 that I still have left are in order of usage:

1. Tamarac 2 body bag. Holds 4 lenses and a flash.
2. Domke. Holds 1 body, 2 lenses and a flash. I use this when I go to a shoot and want to take the minimum stuff I can.
3. Lowepro Comutrekker backpack. This holds everything plus a notebook but weighs 30+ lbs.

It all depends on what you need it for. I have 2 bodies, 4 lenses and a 550. and I don't always take everything with me. Backpacks are the least functional as you have to set them down to get stuff out. Shoulder bags can be used while walking around. I got rid of my fanny pack bag.

My only advice is to buy big enough so you don't outgrow your bag in 6 months.

Here is mine open. Has plenty of space. Will hold a 70-200 L IS upright in a lens pocket (tested it for the future ). It has lots of external pockets for batteriwes, chargers etc. and a tripod, or in my case, a monopod loop.

I have 2 backpacks - Lowe Pro Photo Trekker AW II and a Lowe Pro Mini Trekker AW
Both are superb.

If you don't have many lenses then the smaller Mini Trekker is more than adequate.

How much space does the 550ex take in your Photo Trekker ? Do you have to lay it down or will it fit standing up ? I'm thinking of buying one but not sure how much space there is to all my equipment yet :)

I lie the 550EX down flat, it will stand up with the flash part folded over though

I've been tempted to get on of the photography backpacks, but the problem as I see it, they expect you to ONLY be carrying photo equipment. I want my other hiking "essentials" as well. Jacket, lunch, water, compass, etc. etc...

I bought the $40 Canon bag, put a square of gaffer's tape over the logo, and it fits all my gear:
300D
flash
4 short-range lenses
1 longer telephoto
lots of filters and batteries and cards

I didn't want to pay a ton and the Canon bag has been perfect for me - and I beat on my equipment.

I have the Tamrac Velocity 9.
It's nice because it doesn't really scream "camera bag!"
In addition to being a back pack, you can easily rotate it around yourself and use as a sidebag so it's easy to access equipment.
I can fit my 20D with longest lens attached (135/2 even with extender), 420ex, 85/1.8, 16-35/2.8, 50/1.8II, 1.4x extender, all flash cards, rocket blower, batteries, cleaning supplies, all lens hoods reveresed on lenses, and other little goodies.

I have the velocity 9 too and it works for me. No need to put down the bag to get something and forget to take the bag,OOOOPS. Will fit a body with a long lens like 70-200L
