Whenever I try to take pictures using Auto mode without flash in a fairly dim room (not very well lit), the shutter speed automatically decreases to something in the range of 1/13 or so, and the picture ends up fuzzy. But with flash on, the picture turns out too dark!
What settings should I use for taking pictures in areas that aren't very well lit (say, a large room with not-so-bright lights) yet still maintain the sharpness of the image?

I'm still learning myself, but try these:-
First is a tripod, a mini tripod is easier to carry and can be placed on a table or like. This would prevent any camera movement during the exposure.
Second, I would use the self-timer on 2 seconds. It is possible that even using a tripod, you could move the camera while taking the shot.
Last, to take the shot, you may have to use Shutter Priority (TV) and select the shutter speed. This will be a bit of trial and error. (You could use full manual, but thats further up the learning curve)
There is a lots of info at http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1835#8153

I also had this problem, and it's impossible to use tripod every time I shoot indoors!
Use the "P" mode and adjust the flash power manually (read the manual how to do this)
try to take 4-7 shots with diffrent falsh power levels so you can see
this is what I do and I get great results
good luck!
