My friend has a concrete bowl in his back yard and I am purchasing a 7D with 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS lenses. Most of the time I will be as close to the skaters as shown in the pictures below. The time will be 2 hours before sunset. I want to know how most of you would shoot as in terms of setting and lenses.

Ya, but just with a point a shoot. :( I'm waiting to post pictures on here with the SLR.
Here is the car. Pure sleeper! Nogaro blue, stage 3, 24 psi, 2 K04 turbos, 500ish hp and 500ish Tq.

Very nice. My buddy had a Nogaro with the Ko4's too but was only running bpu and a conservative tune. I'm looking forward to pics with the SLR

If you want to do serious sports photography forget those two zoom lenses and get some L primes. If you just want to get some great shots of the concrete bowl (looks like a "cement pond" to me) a high quality prosumer like the PowerShot G11 or the PowerShot SX1 IS will get you there a lot quicker.

Point taken. How about capturing shots such as the last two pictures above?

Looks like an empty pool. As far as how I would shoot with the gear you listed, I would use the 18-55, and set the camera on Tv for a shutter speed of 500 or higher (yeah, I know I said Tv and not Av or M), prefocus on where the skater will be (should be somewhat predictable) and snap when the skater enters the frame. Adjust ISO so that for shutter speed of 500-1000 your aperature is between 5.6 and 8. I wouldn't try AI Servo mode with the 18-55. For shooting close to sunset time, I'd make sure to position myself so that I avoided any harsh shadows in the frame.

The shots of the blue beamer? I think you could get there with a G11. Shooting in good light and using proper techniques will go a long way toward great images whatever camera you use. Shooting in extreme conditions (low light, rapidily moving subjects) is when the more advanced, and more expensive, equipment becomes beneficial. But the learning curve is longer to get the most out of the pro level stuff.
