I can't remember where I got mine but I have a 1.5TB WD Green drive that I use in a hard drive dock, Works fine. No pre installed software on it but I formatted it so do not know for sure.

I have 2- 1 TB WD MyBooks. I have a batch file that I have on schedule which copies all my files from my laptop to each of the MyBooks which essentially mirrors my data. At times I feel this is too much however memory space is pretty cheap. No issues at all. Great overall. GL

I've had a WD 1Tb external for over 12 months and have had no issues with it.
If it's any help, I use mine in conjunction with a mac

Dont worry about the software too much... just reformat it and do what you wanted to do with it....

if you are looking for security to add to it, there are tons of free software for it and you can even reinstall the ones from WD.

To me, western digital hard drives have been amazing, but really they are all the same. Im not sure what you are using it for, but for basic backup you should be fine.

If you really want extraordinary backup for hard drives, look at external hard drives in a raid setup... there are many setups for speed, backup, and both depending on the raid setup.

Also, if you can afford ssd drives, those will be amazing for speed and portability.

Another good idea is to get your own external hard drive case and buy a Western Digital VeociRaptor :) They spin at 10,000 rpms!!!! i used to have a 74.5 gig raptor when they were about $300 and the speed just blew me away!

I think that you must be talking about these drives. The latest from Western Digital.

WD Smartware enabled drives (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Essential-External-WDBAAF0010HBK-NESN/dp/B002JMYCTC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263013339&sr=8-3)

Western Digital heard the outcry and has come up with a solution:

New Updates for WD SmartWare Software (11/16/09): This update implements customer feedback requests to: hide the Virtual CD (VCD), enhance the ability to opt-out of WD SmartWare completely, and exit WD SmartWare from the Windows system tray. Visit Western Digital Support to download your update by inputting the model number of your hard drive.

Hope this helps you.

Both SSDs and VRs will be really quick - but only if used with a decent interface. Sticking one of them on a USB port would be insane.

Besides, it's a waste of money having fast drives for backup. Backups aren't the sort of task you sit there and watch - you either schedule them for a time when you'll not be using your PC or run them manually when you're not doing anything else.

I've got 2 WD "Mybook" 1TB drives. There is some software provided on them, but I don't use them. I installed it once, real piece of crap. Just delete it or format the drives when you get them

^^^ This is the WD drive that I have for my Mac. It does come with that WD SmartWare installed and it pops up as an external drive, not sure what it does on a PC though. I have tried to uninstall it using the above mentioned link from Western Digital but have not had any luck. You have to update the firmware first before you use the program to disable the WD SmartWare and when I try to upgrade the firmware it says I don't have a WD drive connected even though the icon is right on my desktop and I know it's working because I am using it for backups. Some day when I have the time I will call them to try to figure it out, but for now I just ignore it. It's a little irritating but really not a big deal and it doesn't prevent me from using the Mac's built-in backup program.
