300D/75-300USM II/Tamron 1.4 TC/1600ISO (it was dark)/Some luck/cropping/photoshopping

I need a a grand to get me a 100-400 L I think...I'm happy with the shots taken in really good light and the start/finish straights ones and close ups....just that the low light ones are a bit crappy...I blame Tony Blair and my dodgy 1.4 Teleconverter. Anyone like gmen/KennyG/Cadwell/Brands etc want to give me some pointers please?

The corvette shot was a good pan! I like the action in the rest of the shots as well :)

Do You have any photos of the great Dane Tom Kristensen who set record by winning for the seventh time :-)

Nice work. Just proves that the photographer is more important than the equipment. It is just easier with better equipment. ;-)

not that no one doesn't know already!

I'm sorting and uploading the rest slowly so will post some more of my meagre efforts later...if anyone can bear to look at them that is!

You have some nice shots there, Dave. The rear shot of the Panoz and the angle you got for the Lola coming through the Porsche curves are particularly nice.

I can imagine that you had a struggle with the 75-300mm plus TC in low light. That’s an f/8 lens at best on full zoom; not what you really need and beyond the AF specification of your camera. Unfortunately the 100-400L wouldn’t have served you much better under those circumstances. It’s a relatively slow f/5.6 at 400mm and its focusing is a little marginal when the light starts to go. It would probably have been a little more resistant to the green marks from internal reflections caused by the headlights though.

Good low light motorsport lenses are expensive. In terms of zooms there’s really only the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8EX. Other than that, it’s the big f/2.8 primes like the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM or the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM.

I don’t know how you were metering but when shooting GT cars with headlights I usually switch to manual and set my aperture / shutter for correct exposure of the empty track. The headlights tend to throw the exposure way off resulting in over dark pictures. Even then, the headlights can still cause problems with auto-focus if you catch them at the wrong angle.

Good work with the pictures and let’s see some more!

Thanks for the pointers, much appreciated. You are right when you say I was struggling in low light. I was trialling-and-erroring with settings(you can all use that phrase if you want to) and some came out exposed more or less right (well I thought so) and some were totally under exposed.

Better get saving for a Sigma I can't lift then!

Thanks :)
