OK...I've done the searches, and this is what I think I learned:

Given the choice between 70-200 f/4 and the 85 f/1.8, I should use the 85;
The 85 under the basket might not be the best (too close) but further away, a-ok;The body is a 7d...so can set iso at 6400. Would 6400 help (or make enough difference) with the 70-200 f/4, or will that be too "noisy"?

And, if using the 85 f/1.8, what would you recommend for shutter speed?

Gym is well and consistently lit. Game tonight is sold out! (That's hs basketball, sold out).

Any thoughts shared would be appreciated.

Your 85 is probably the better choice... If you say it's a well lit gym, 6400 may be a bit too much, test and adjust accordingly per your histogram...and make sure you do a custom white balance...those gym lights are havoc!
Good Luck!

Here's my recipe with the 85mm f/1.8 on a 7D

Location: 6' behind baseline; 6' inside sideline. You'll be able to get good shots from the 3-point line and in. If the action is on your side the basket, you'll quickly see that the 85 is too long for the real tight, inside game. Lastly, watch out for the referees as they like that spot on the floor, too.

ISO 2500; f/2.0 shutter speed 1/640

If your gym is well lit, you might not have to go above ISO 2500 to still get 1/640. Our home gym is 'ok,' but not the best, either. If you want faster shutter speeds, by all means, keep cranking up the ISO. The 7D shots display very little noise even at 2500.

Good luck. Look forward to seeing some of your shots. Here's a link to the 7D at the settings mentioned: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=806772
