Those are "heat pits" which allow the snake to essentially see in thermal!

... or something like that. The heat pits are used to hunt prey. I love the second shot. Great angle.

Well I was trying to give a simplified answer, as I assume not everyone is as obsessed with Pythons as I am.

Nice shots snakeman! The heat pits make it look "dangerous" :D
