I have a 300mm canon L series lense which I like very much, but my only other lense is a cheap 35 to 80mm canon lense made of plastic. I don't shoot much with the smaller lense, but I would like to get one that is better than the plastic one I have now. I have a D60,and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a decent all around lense for about 500.00!

Birddog,

Do you particularly want a zoom?

What about the 85/1.8 plus the 50/1.8 - the 50/1.4 would be better, but the two probably go way over 500 (whatever currency unit you're using :) ).

I live in So.Cal. so it's US money all the way! But I think I will check out the 2 lenses you suggested. Thanks for the help.

Canon's 28-105/3.5-4.5 is very good and only ~$230. If you want some more speed, try Sigma's 28-70/2.8 or 24-70/2.8, each is under $400. If you really aren't interested in wide angle much, the 28-70 is cheaper and uses 77mm instead of 82mm filters. Roger's suggestion is particularly good if you like fast lenses. If you like macro, the Canon 50/2.5 Macro (1:2) or Sigma 50/2.8 Macro (1:1) + the 85/1.8 would run you about $550, new. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help.I just ordered the 50/1.4 from B&H. Does B&H usually have the best prices?
