Thanks everyone.

Sorry Marie, but you're not even close, but I think the name was right the 1st time with the "h".
No one else wants to take a shot at it?
Hint: It was internationally famous for a race through Mexico.

Hmmm ... that Rambler sure looks like a Vauxhall, but most likely the acceleration is quite different
And hey, it's still more beautiful than the Gremlin next to it

Best regards,
Andy

Thank's Roger. It would be an interesting chase sequence 'till the brakes started to fade... or they both had to stop for gas! ;-)

OK, here's the answer. It's a '54 Lincoln Capri
The 1954 Lincoln was right in the thick of the "Hotrod Lincoln" generation. Lincolns won first place in the Pan American Road Race in 1954.

http://www.eastwood.com/text/content/EW_Experience/getinspired.htm
The 1954 Lincoln Capri truly was the unchallenged "King of the Road." During the annual Mobilgas Economy Run (aka the Mexican Pan-American Road Race), the Lincoln Capri took first, second, third, and fourth place wins consecutively in the years 1952-4. The Lincoln Capri outdid 86% of sportscar and Standard class entries, which incuded: Ferrari, Jaguar, Packard, and Cadillac, just to name a few. The Road Race was one of the world's longest and toughest road competitions in its time, covering a 1,912 mile course from Tuxtla Gutierrez to Juarez, Mexico. The rugged route took its drivers on paved and dirt roads with hard twisting curves and steep mountain grades which climbed up to 10,486' in elevation. The road race came to an end in 1955; in 1988, the Pan Am was revived by Mexican and American enthusiasts. Today, the New Pan Am event is operated in a Pro Rally format lasting seven days each October.

Good 'after the race' story:
