I have a spare older laptop which is going to waste so I thought of carrying it on shoots with me. I have done a format and clean install of Win 98SE (It cant quite run XP) and downloaded the latest twain driver for the 300D. I have installed the driver several times but the laptop cant seem to recognise a camera when connected and importing into any image software isn't happening. The nearest I get is in Controlpanel / System / device manager which reports an "Unknown USB device" connected. The laptop is a Dell inspiron P166.

Maybe you need to have your camera set to Normal rather than PTP or the other way around.

Why connect the camera to the laptop? Get a card reader and transfer images that way. Unless you want to use the remote feature....
BTW - Canon is listing a separate TWAIN driver for 98.....
TWAIN - Technology Without An Interesting Name....

I loaded the G5 driver and that worked OK. I am set for PTP on the 300D so you could be right - will try it. The card reader is the best all round soloution and I already have one on hand. I just aren't too happy about yanking cards in and out all the time. They just dont seem that robust to me. Anyone got any views on this.

They do seem a bit flimsy but so far I have not had a problem and it's the only way I move my pictures. I would suspect that if care is taken to use the eject button on the camera and insert the card correctly you should not have a problem.
