--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys, take a look at this photo and help me out here:

http://home.cinci.rr.com/davidstaco/moon%20blur%201.jpg

I've been trying to get a good shot of the moon with my new EOS 20D, and I can't seem to get it to come out sharp. The first time it happened, people suggested I open the apeture up to f/11 or f/14, so I tried many different settings, even to f/45, but they all come out blurry.

I'm using a new EOS 20D with the 75-300mm f4/5.6 USM lens, the pretty cheap one.

Anyways, here's the settings for that shot:

F/11,
Shutter: 1/15
Focal: 300mm
ISO: 100
Metering- Pattern (i've tried all 3 modes to no avail)

Also, I've been using a tri-pod, and had the camera set to 10 second delay.

The only two reasons I could think of it blurring like this would be either the lens just sucks THAT bad, or the lens is slapping so hard on my $70 tripod that it's vibrating and causing a blur.

Any help to help me get a better shot is MUCH appreciated!

Are you using a remote release for the shutter, or the self-timer?
Hang some weight from the tripod (make sure that it doesn't swing), put the focus & the cam on "M" & try this:
F/11,
Shutter: 1/200
ISO: 100
Also try ISO 200 & see what you get.

You need to meter the moon as it was daylight. I.e. faster shutter speeds. A tripod and self-timer or mirror lock-up to avoid camera shake.

A few factors can come into play...
The fact it is moving very fast (although it seems static).
Atmospheric conditions, pollution, heat, haze, etc. etc.
Your elevation, which may help the above mentioned items.
Lens/camera mount. The wind may move your camera/lens on the tripod enough to blurr a pic.
Also, a full moon is very bright, long exposures are not needed.
Hope this helps.

When shooting the moon, you should not try a shutter speed of less than 1/60 because the moon is moving.

Plus, you might want to use mirror lockup to eliminate the possibility of mirror slap.

How old is your zoom. Cheap zooms go out of focus at the higher magnification pretty easy.

That looks like an unsharpened crop. I wonder what it would look like uncropped with some USM applied.

Is your lens the IS version? If so, have you tried disabling the IS? I find that IS sometimes messes up and makes my picture blurry when using a tripod.

Anteros, you are completely correct the manual even states that a user should turn OFF the IS whenever attached to a tripod.

Shutter speed was too slow, that moon is moving!
