Playing With Sharpness

Check out these two photos, notice how one is sharper on the dog and the other is sharper on the couch. The first pic was taken on Auto and the second was taken on portrait setting.

Your right, freaky. I've never bothered to shoot auto settings on my 20D. Now I'm kind of curious to see what they can do.

I have been playing all over the place with different settings to try to learn.
seeing so many different variables it's confusing but guess this is the learning curve!
See the diff in the clarity and sharpness of the couch. Taken with 70-200f/4
