Hi everyone. I have been trying to get really close-up shots of insects using my Canon 100mm lens but have not had any luck. Currently I have a 40D and 7D along with various lenses but no primes. What are my best, and cheapest options? Do I need to get a reversing ring and a 50mm prime? I am new to this whole macro thing so please bare with me.

A set of Kenko ext tubes will allow you to get to 2:1, reversing a 50mm lens on the front will get you to 3:1 (or 4:1 with the ext tubes as well). I am assuming the 100mm is the F2.8 macro lens

Isn't your 100mm a prime? The Kenko tubes work well for me.

Correct, it is the 100mm F/2.8 USM. So I can attach a 50mm lens with a reversing ring to the front of my 100mm?

I guess it is. I'm one of those guys that goes out and buys a bunch of stuff and then figures out how to use it after. I know, I know. A fool and his money are soon parted (but it sure is fun at times). ;)

Yes you can, and you loose a lot of room between subject and glass which makes lighting harder.
My suggestion is to get a set of Kenko extension tubes first, its easier and gives great 2:1 results ;)
I show the magnifications of the two here at Macro Variations (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=578274)
