Challenge #258 - Personal Nostalgia

Personal Nostalgia -- Take me back, take us back to a scene, a look, a style, a place, an item, a whole era... whatever you can 'drum up' --- that brings back fond memories for you, and maybe even rouses a deep sense of connection. Use the Title to your advantage too.

If need, this may help explain 'nostalgia': http://www.freewikimedia.com/en/wiki/Nostalgia.html

Winners will be decided based on a combination of: the spur of originality, and photo excellence (amateur judge here).

p.s. -- acknowledged... 'personal' and 'nostalgia' is a bit redundant.

Results from Canon G-series speed challenge #258

GSeries1 G-Hippie
Cool capture conveys relaxed attention and being tuned to nature, the moment, oneself. I can see where the memory and the mood holds more than the eye can see.
For the picture itself, I would want to see it a little more dramatic… perhaps a shift of place where some rays of sun would have come in.

PaulB Forgot how much fun.
Definitely the expression fills the scene. A nicely captured moment.
The photo has got an appeal. I could talk myself into leaving the lower background in, or think to crop it out.

Maureen Souza Great-Aunt Florence's Doll (circa 1894)
Now that’s going back in time. On the surface, makes a statement about ‘no frills’ times. And then I take in that you’ve brought up your own memories and moments.
Photo is quite fine, if a bit understated… but that goes with the general sense of the era. Underscores it.

itmfl Summer vacation, no more class!
I like it… whatever it says. I can see you’re tying this to memorable days.
I like the photo. It’s a bit ‘raw’ in feel, but the mess and the stack hang together.

Car The sun shone, days were long and cares were few
Yes they were. A trip back (way back for some of us) to get back to such simple pleasures.
Nice picture, clearly grabbed the moment with the smiles.

rpolitsr When I was just a lad of ten
So this is a place where early impressions were made I take it. Old stomping grounds and fond memories no doubt.
I like the photo. Probably the 800 pix limit does not do it justice.

teekay Looking back...
That’s quite a collection, and definitely a walk back in time. (did you fly all of those?)
I like the picture and lighting.

marie loved & worn old scrapbook dated 1882, showing greeting cards from a different age
Thanks for sharing a glimpse back in time.
Picture is interesting, the way it emphasizes the age and use of the scrapbook… and leaves more I’d want to see. (and that's a good thing)

corythosaurus Wooden Blocks
That’s going way back,
(who knew those days prepared us for… texting)
Picture is nice for the detail and a bit of composition. I want a bit more somehow.

Kevan_G9 Charmed Life...
Bracelet and photos say it well. Times and turns of life lived.
Photo isn’t perfect, but it has a quality of drawing me in.

tmwag Fill er up
Definitely. There once was a time…. and all that went with it.
Photo… it’s there, it doesn’t wow though.

Mike53545 Rember this question: Did you remember the film?
Oh yeah… that was then. And ‘Adobe Photo Shop’ was probably really the adobe photo shop on the west side.
Picture is pretty basic.

BobsYourUncle Thursday, Friday, Happy Days . . . Rockin All Week . . .
Ah Yes. Be-bop, Rock, and Hop. How did we leave that behind?
The picture… well, just not the same hop to it.

--------------------------
Well gang, it’s a wrap. Thanks for digging back in your memories and sharing your experiences. No doubt there’s more depth and untold feelings accompanying each of your photos than we can imagine. I hope you’ve enjoyed traveling back.

I’ve got to pick three out of the bunch. If yours is not one of them, then know that this does not take anything away from your very personal moments in time…. Congratulations all!

Thanks Bob, for remembering to 'turn the lights off'.

I'll be cutting matts and mounting pics, hanging Entries on the gallery wall for viewing and judging later today. (kidding)
Stay tuned.

Thanks CarloY! Wow...I really wasn't expecting this!

You're spot on, it wasn't the best photo. I had this notion of using my wife's charm bracelet going into the challenge imagining I could pull off a really good shot, but then reality stepped in and all I got were reflections off the glass frames, the frames themselves wouldn't cooperate constantly falling over, and the charm bracelet itself was less than charming, while I tried with increased frustration to get everything just so. It never happened. Try as I might, I took my little clutch of photos from room to room in the house trying to find enough light to take the photo and avoid the reflections. After what...40 photos...I finally gave up and picked what I thought was the best of the lot. I'm glad this challenge is over. Geesh!

To my fellow winners and to everyone, I thought everyone did a marvelous job conveying the subject. I had my favorites and mine wasn't one of them. I wish I could say I had fun with this challenge, but if you saw my tantrums and stomping off to get away from the project, I think you would understand. I can laugh about it now. Thanks again.

Let me reflect on our next challenge and I will try to get it out by midday today.

Congrats to 1st: Kevan_G9, Car and PaulB. I enjoyed all the entries, and the judging had to be difficult.

Here's what I came up with, but obviously I couldn't use my G9 to shoot it, and therefore it wouldn't have been eligible. I used my wife's little Powershot SD1100 IS instead.

Congrats to Kevan, Carolyn and PaulB! I loved so many of the entries...Marie's aged scrapbook, tmwag's gas pump and Bob's juke box....lot's of great nostalgia.

The doll in my photo was my great-aunt's only doll/toy. When I was ten, she gave it to me and I haven't done anything much with her except discard the moth-eaten dress she was wearing. Somehow, I have grown to love her just as she is.

Thanks to Carlo for the great subject this week - and for choosing worthy winners out of such a variety of memories.

At first I had much the same idea as Mike53545, and was going to take a shot of a huge pile of old Kodachrome slide boxes and title it "ASA 25", but then I thought some of the younger photographers might not know what it meant ;)

Congrats Kevan, Carolyn, and Paul!!! Great theme, CarloY, and fine job with the challenge! I had some ideas this week, but father time outpaced me, and just couldn't get it done. I really enjoyed all the ideas presented!:D

Congratulations to Kevan and Paul and thanks CarloY for hosting and judging (and for my placing)
See Kevan - all that stomping and tantrums paid off ;-)
So many great entries - all very nostalgic in their own right.

Car wrote: So many great entries - all very nostalgic in their own right.Absolutely true. For me, reviewing was fun and stimulating... though a bit time consuming... just to 'spend time with the photo' and let it sink in.

Car, your entry was really a tugging at me, and nipping at Kevan's heels, with its so exuberant simple expression of joy. Well done. All of the judging and choosing was tough... so many real stories and fascinating tethers.

I'm glad to hear the several comments that you enjoyed the theme. Thanks to all for putting your soulful efforts into it.

you in the swimming togs ... and then

lol

terrific photos from everyone
thank you very much for hosting and judging and all the comments Carlo
it was a very difficult task for you
and a real challenge for all entering

like Maureen my Aunt gave me the gift (scrapbook)when I was young (11)
( Maureen was 10 when she received the doll, must be the age Aunts give away special treasures )
I have an old doll too (over 100) but she is all cracked up and more of a baby doll ( face)than Maureen's .
someone gave it to me long time ago. she was cuddled too much I guess
lol

loved the winners pictures also Teekays shot and content
and itmfl's classroom's atmosphere
Bobs jukebox looks great, if a bit lonely without the great sounds
lol can't have everything

Congrats all

Although I observed SC #258 from the sidelines, I have to say that this sure was an interesting theme, and congrats to Kevan, Car, and Paul B for the wins . . . and teekay, you sure know how to bring out the best from a G1 . . what a great photo!

I used to have a bunch of little picture cutouts of various things to go with the jukebox but they were removed when I painted and carpeted my rec room. I wanted to put them up on the wall for the picture but I couldn't find them. think my wife threw them out . . . . . There were figures of people dancing, sucking on sodas, girls in poodle skirts and a lot more. It would have really helped my "naked" jukebox picture.

A little history behind my 1955 Wurlitzer jukebox:

Somewhere around 1981 I traded a 1972 Austin Mini for the jukebox. It didn't work when I got it. I dis-assembled it all over my living room and got it working. I fixed all the lights, made the records play and even got the coin mechanism functioning. There is a switch to toggle the coin thing off and on.
It's a great old piece of nostalgia! It does need a complete restoration as much of it is well worn from years of use. But it works!

Man you ought to try moving the thing - Egads it is heavy!! What a grunt to pick it up and move it! It has little wheels under it but thats only good for a flat hard surface. No good for carpet.

When I took that picture, it was playing The Beach Boys Good Vibrations.

Congratulations Kevan Car and PaulB for the best entries.

I enjoyed every picture here. Personally, I was deeply impressed by the pictures where the ‘old’ mood was more evident: the doll of Maureen, the almost monochromatic note books of teekay, the old postcards of marie, the portrait frames of Kevan. The others, with the colorful expression of joy were interesting also, as were those ‘technically’ old (the film rolls, the jukebox, the fuel pump). I think the old school evokes the same feeling as my old neighborhood.
My entry is a picture of the Cotopaxi street in the old downtown of Quito and the first house at left is the house where I grew from newborn to a ten years lad. It was then white, with a beautiful heavy wooden door in the round arch of the main gate (now a square door :() and three inner yards whit about 24 rooms surrounding them as most of the old houses of the Spanish Downtown.

For some reason I found "Summer Vacation" to be particularly haunting. It made me think of photos of Chernobyl.

You could put it in with a series from there and I don't think anyone would find it out of place.

thats a terrific story.
always loved the old juke boxes and its great to hear you got that old one working
hope it lasts forever. must be great fun putting in the coins.
wonder do you have to have the old money or is the same as years ago . maybe so . over here the money changed a few times over the years so I don't know if old coins would be found for the old juke boxes

maybe that can be fixed though.
you'd probably be able to sort it if there was a problem

smashing music you had on when you took the picture lol
pity we could not hear it
I too have 'good vibrations' (Beach Boys) , among hundreds of forties/fifties/sixties ...
lets just say.....all kinds of everything

I do enjoy flipping the switch once in a while just to get the 3 plays for a quarter. I have never had an issue with todays coins though it has been at least a decade since I have put a coin in it. Maybe 15 years, I don't remember.

Sadly, the jukebox has sat unused for many years. About a decade or more ago I loaned it to our church for a theme presentation they were doing. It was tough to move it and I had to be real careful. It worked for the play but since then, dust has taken hold and now the entire mechanism including the player arm is getting sticky. The needle does not quite contact the record properly and it skips. I know how to fix it but it will require a fair bit of time. And the drive belt is stretched out so far it falls off frequently. I did have fun yesterday demonstrating it to my youngest son and his girlfriend. I played them Hermans Hermits - No Milk Today and then Do Wah Diddy. They were impressed with it. My son said that in all these years, he never knew it worked.

I wish I had more time - I would love to restore the old Jukebox. 55 years old and still going puts a smile on my face! HEY!!! I'm 55 . . . . .

As for the "Egads" expression, I have been using that one since I was a puppy! Beats the rude alternatives of today.

British descent? Yes. My great grandfather came from Britain and my lineage contains relations to the House of Hanover. Somewhere way back when I have some relation to QE1, but not sure just exactly how. Maybe one day I will trace it more.

he found a 'foreign' fault ( I get things wrong at times but I'll presume for sure that you know what I mean)
also there was a fault with the broadband box here beside the computer
they send me a new box by special courier today
