I know that IPS is better but the only Dell screen I could find that has IPS is a lot smaller than 27"

I was looking at getting a 27" imac but with all the bad press on the screen I figured I'd get more for my money with a big screen and getting a new laptop soon.

So what are the recommendations for screens of 27" approx? Any drawbacks in connecting a macbook pro by dvi instead of displayport?

Well, that's pretty wishy-washy - are you interested in a Mac or just the screen? The iMac's screen has been very well received and any problem's you may have heard about are expected in new releases. I haven't heard anything bad lately about the iMac's save for a problem here and there (which is not uncommon).

I'm guessing you're talking about Dell's U2711 - which is a good screen. As far as I know it hasn't even come out for sale yet - but I haven't looked for it either. 27" screen's are not common for one. Dell does have other IPS screens, you probably just don't know what you're looking for. And if you are interested in a Mac I would highly recommend you go use one for at least 20 minutes. If you already have and don't care either way, then just get a PC and be done with it.

I want OSX. I need a laptop. I was going to get a lowly macbook pro 13" and an imac. One for portability, one for processing power. Now I think maybe it's better if I get a big screen and a powrful laptop instead.

I've read on gizmodo and if you look at the imac 27" screen you can see it is significantly "yellower" on the bottom than on top and all replacements are the same. Did not see it with my own eyes.

So unless someone can confirm that imac 27" screens are OK now I am better off shopping for a separate screen anyway. Probably cheaper too than getting imac+laptop.

I have searched on Dell Canada's website for ips and only the 22" screen came back as results. So I wonder what do people have around here that is not extremely expensive but still good enough for amateur photographers?

There is no such thing as an Apple laptop that comes even close to the power of a 27" i7 iMac...
Rumors are that Apple should be releasing new laptop soon.

On the 27" screen: Thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=841291).

Mine is fine. It's just the glossy part that's a pain. You have to be able to control your ambient light.

Dell has three top of the line IPS displays (U2410, U2711, 3008WFP- S-IPS version) and three nearly equally good PVA screens (2408WFP, 2708WFP, 3008WFP - S-PVA version).

Do NOT assume that dvi and displayport will work well with each other. It has been shown time and again that the adapters, especially apple ones, have two major flaws:
1) They are one way. They either go DVI to Displayport, OR Displayport to DVI. You can't use the same one to go both ways.
2) There are compatibility issues. Some get them to work just fine, many see glitchs every once in a while, some just can't get them to work at all.

If you want processing power AND NEED a mac, 27" iMac with i7 ($2k) is the only option currently worth anything (it's actually not ridiculously overpriced). If you only want OSX, not need it, then I suggest you go to a place with a lot of good computers and use two computers for a bit. First should be the 15" MBP. The second should be an asus or dell i7 based laptop that is the same price, running windows 7. Then run some photo programs and see which one feels better for you. I bet what you think you wanted and what you think is fastest won't be the same.

Apparently Dell Canada only has a 22" version with IPS but they do have a 27" screen that markets itself as 110% color gamut???

...

I'm not looking to do anything weird but it would be nice if my mac laptop can output at full resolution to a Dell(or other) screen and not be limited to 1920 single DVI resolution.

It definitely is too good to say no. It's just the screen defects that got me worried otherwise I'd already be 100% certain of the imac 27" quad core. Certain defects are expected but when an electronics journalists gets a bad one followed by 2 replacements that are also bad you know it's not a 1% chance of getting a defect.

As for OSX: Don't worry I already know what I am getting into. I would already work full time on OSX if my workplace policy did not dictate windows. Even then I spend most of my time on linux in vmware or via ssh.

If you have a DVI laptop, it'll likely be single link only, macbooks were like that way back when. I say stick to the port you have, don't buy anything that requires adapters unless there is no other option.

And it wasn't so much an OSX vs windows statement, it was a core 2 duo vs much better hardware statement. Plenty of people on this forum that are running OSX on non-Apple hardware

So your 27" iMac screen has not got a yellow tint in the bottom right when viewing a grey screen ?

Which if you look on apple discussions many of them do. Mine is only very slight, and nowhere near a bad as some I've seen. Apple have told me to take it to the nearest Apple repair centre to get it fixed, but I'm waiting until I know they have sorted this well known problem out.
