I would like to protect my 580EX's mounting foot from abrasions with a cover, a complement to a hot shoe cover. Is such an item even available? I search the web and find no results.
Thank you.

I have never heard of such an item. Also, in over 40 years of photography, I've never had any problems with the mounting foot on any of my flashes. If you use a reasonable amount of care, the flash should be fine.

The flash also comes with a case. That's where mine spends it's time when not being used.

My 550 sits in its bag as well. It's the only way I can keep it together with it's removable free standing base.

I don't even know where the base is ;-)

bohdank,
I assume the 580 had a base? I'm a cheapskate, still using the 550 I got for the Eos-3. It still does everything I want on my 30D so I have felt no particular rush to replace it as I'm still using the Eos-3.

Yes it does but I don't use it, so do not pack it in my bag. I'm fairly sure I left it in the original box.
