In french  ...
Basically they like it, remarquable central part , even if it's a bit too soft outside center wide open. even at F11 or more it stays soft outside center.. and too much vignetting. Very very resistant to flare.

C'est vraiment beau! :)

I didn't find it too soft in the outer examples. Decent for a $600 lens. I'll see once mine arrives on Monday.

I haven't had time to go out and take photos.

From my experiences, it flares fairly easily, if you have a light source just outside the frame, other than that, I haven't had time to really test it out.

I haven't abandoned the thread, I will be back with some shots for you guys.

Please hurry! :) I would like to see what you come up with. I've been looking at images from Flickr with this lens and it's pretty sharp. :) So, before I take the plunge, I would like to get your analysis of this pancake lens. :)

Thanks J.D.

Ya I use this with the 5D usually for my photowalks. Only thing I don't like is indoor shots with it since my EG-S focus screen makes it kinda dark. Focus is buttery smooth and very very portable. Next time I head out to nuit blanche I'll remember to bring a tripod though.

I don't suppose someone could post a photo of the lens itself ?

Also, what type of hood does it come with, petal-type or tube-type ?

By the way, it's available from here (http://www.robertwhite.co.uk/products.asp?PT_ID=708) in the UK.

Cheers.

Here is a video showing the lens

I tried out the V40, great lens but I could not get used to manual focusing but it was well built and very solid yet tiny.

Verbal, you need a sensor cleaning

Question on the focus ring. I just recently ordered this lens and while it's optical quality met my satisfaction I sent it back due to a hitch in the focus ring. Whenever I would start to turn the ring or stop and change direction it would move very freely for a couple of degrees then change to a much firmer feel. My Ultron 40 is much smoother and consistent throughout the rotation.

I'm sure it was just a bad copy and I'll probably order this lens again in the near future but, I just wanted to confirm with other users that what I noticed was an anomaly and not the norm for this particular lens.

Thanks,
Scott

Maybe I am awakening a dead threat but... do you use a focusing screen for this lens? Would it be possible to use it on a 5d Mk II without any modifications?

scottda
1st of December 2011 (Thu), 17:57
Depending on how you use it you could probably get by without a super micro focus screen. Being 20mm it has a very large DOF. And it has a really nice focus scale. For landscapes you would be best served to use the focus scale for hyperfocal distance or even just zone focusing. Even street photography at f5.6 or smaller you could/would probably use zone focusing. If you were to do some very close up work you might want the micro focus screen. However, this lens does have focus confirmation so that could be used for such work if you don't mind focus and recompose.

Having said all that I do use the EE-s focus screen since I got the Voigt 40 and just keep it on all the time. If/when I get another Voigt 20 I'll use the focus screen for the times I do close up work were critical focus is needed.

scottda

I like the 40 a lot. It's a nice focal length for walk around, well built and I really like the MF. It's nice to compose and focus instead of focus and re-compose.
