I am looking at getting a monopod. I would prefer 4 section because of the shorter storage length, but I want something solid enough, but under $50. the cheaper, the better (to an extent...)

So far, I am thinking this:

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-676B-Aluminum-Monopod-Black/dp/B00009R6CO/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263449484&sr=8-8

Any good? I plan on using this for landscape use and maybe sports use if I ever try to get into that (just casual, nothing serious)

Thanks!

Oh, I also found this

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Monopod-100-Cameras-Lenses/dp/B0002YE6EU/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_image_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1263449484&sr=8-8

interesting head, good price!

the 676b was my first monopod. it worked very well with my 5d and 100-400L. i now use a 5-section benro monopod that's even lighter with 1d mark III and 100-400L.

Keep in mind it's max extension height. If you are a tall feller, this may be too short in some cases.

it is a tad short, but I can rig up a head or extender of some kind if I have to :)

I bought a Dynex a couple months ago at Best Buy while I worked there; got it for $5 and it works great. I think retail is like $40 on it. There's a lot of markup on tripods and monopods.

I just bought the manfroto 790b (http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-790B-Modo-Photo-Video-Monopod/dp/B000FA7PQC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263567776&sr=8-1). At 15.4'' closed I can fit it inside my fastpack 250 with my laptop!!!

6' 1"

I can fiddle with something. I probably won't be using it at full height most of the time anyway.

Manfrotto makes great quality tripods.
The 4 section 680B is too short for me at 5'11".
I would look at the 679B or 681B which is more stable if you use longer heavier lenses and longer in length.

at that height i would really pay attention to size. i'm 5'10 and i'm pretty sure there were several inches left over when i used the manfrotto.

also the tilt head probably adds about three inches.

I have the Manfrotto 681B and 488RC2 BH . I'm 5'9 , so when i have a camera mounted (XSi) i cannot fully extend the monopod cause it would be too tall . If your 6"1" then it might work for you . The 681B is 63.4" fully extended , the BH is 4" , and the camera approx another 4" so that totals around 71.4" ( 5"9-1/2" ) . There maybe taller ones but i don't know which ones . This is also very sturdy to a vibration tap test . You can get it at Amazon for $60.00 . BH is what is bad , $115.00 but probably cheaper somewhere else . The BH can be used on any tripod with a 1/4-20-inch male thread, and head to tripod attachment is 3/8-inch female . Robust three section Monopod featuring sure rubber grip, wrist carrying strap, quick action lever leg lock system with 45° run, large 60mm camera/head platform with plastic cover and dual 1/4" - 3/8" camera fixing screw.
