I took this picture with the following parameters:

800 ISO
2.8 apeture
15 shutter speed
2 feet away from object
No flash just ambient light
100% cropped from middle of image
Camera sitting on the table

How does this look?

Again, it looks like the lens is a keeper. It looks spot-on if you've focused on the front edge of the can. I believe that you can start resting a bit easier now.

That looks pretty good if that's the center. I would use a flat surface for the subject if it were me, just so you know that the letters don't go out of focus, only because it's a round object. The other thing to check is the crops in the corners, which is where I have found most of the problems with that lens. A bit soft at the edges may be exceptible, but if moves out from the edge very far, then there might be a problem.

Unfortuantely, I see massive JPEG compression artifacts around the black on yellow/black on white letters.

I wonder if the artifacts come from the in-camera compression (ie. are you shooting JPEG?) or the prepare-for-web compression?
