I haven't tried converting any pictures to black and white before, because I didn't have software that included a channel mixer, which gives much better results than just desaturating. And I haven't had the money to get a decent system like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I've recently started to learn The Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/), however, which does channel mixing (and everything else I could want) - and it's free.

So here's my first go at a color to black-and-white conversion. This one's about 90% red channel, 10% green channel and 0% blue channel.

[Update: I used the "curves" adjustment to make my own darker, spookier version of this picture, and updated it. Thanks to smittymike19 for the suggestion.]

Nice, maybe a bit more contrast or try reshooting in more direct light to emphasize the shadows/highlights......just my suggestion, it's a very nice pic as is.

smittymike19: Hey, that's spooky. Neat! By all means, leave it up!

Did you apply a little color toning to that edit? A sepia color, perhaps? I like it.
