Hey ive just called nearly every camera shop around and found a place that has 1 Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Canon.

He has given me a respectable price but he says its not the new Macro version. So im curious. what is the differance between these two sigma 24-70 lenses? he also has only 1 in stock so ill have to test it out, if its not good i will have to pass, please help asap as i have to call back :) thanks

You should go down there and test it out. Mainly shoot it at f2.8, but also see how the lens "progresses" at f5.6. At f2.8 it should be good. You will NOT (almost guaranteed) have any focusing issues; the older model wasn't known for it. The older model is called "EX DG DF" while the new version is "EX DG Macro". The key is to simply handle it and shoot some frames with it. If it's a good price, and the lens seems good optically, jump on it. See my sig for test shots with the new version. Best wishes.

First picture to show you guys the lens, im completely new to this so if its a bad picture to show the quality let me know. its about 6 pm here and the lighting in my house is horrible but, yeah :) I shot it on AV and set it to 2.8.
Let me know what you think of the quality, not the actual picture, ill get out and about around the house tomorrow and take some actual photos. :)

It is focused toward the middle/left of the metal. sorry its so bad :\

Looks good to me as image (although I would have focused on the frontmost part of the mike).

As focus and sharpness test, you should really use some flat subject (like the camera box) that is EXACTLY parallel to the lens.

Best regards,
Andy

Looks nice given constraints ... but personally I am always concious of resale value and the newer Macro version of this lens seems both very well liked by owners and also will hold value better. If you're getting a great price then it balances things.

If you want the latest version why not buy online via B&H who have competitive prices? Or are you getting 'wholesale' price here too?
