Hi all!

I'm taking a weeklong trip to Gatlinburg TN in July and will be visiting the GSMNP.

I currently have an XTI with these lenses.

50mm F1.8
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Canon 75-300 F/4.0-5.6
Kit Lens

I am interested in renting a lens for the week. Specifically for wildlife photos. (Dont wanna get too close!)

Any thoughts on what lens I should rent would be appreciated!

I think 400 mm will be enough reach, f4 if you can, or f5.6.

When I went this fall 400 is long enough most of the times. However I kind of struggled alot of times with my slower 400 5.6, When I go back this year I will prob rent the 500 f4.

I think 4oomm f4 would be good for you. Its a good lens ( when you don't want to get too close!).
Its very light compared to many lenses and can produce sharp images even when used with 2 * teleconverter.

I would go with the 500mm f4 with the 1.4 teleconvertet as an option. Also make sure you have a good tripod with a wimberly type head on it. Good luck and have fun.

the 400 will work just fine, most bear shots will be from 50yds to 100 yds

water falls wide angle, and most of all in july there will be plenty of people with you,

good luck

In Cades Cove the 100-400 will work fine out in the open. While in the woods a 70-200 2.8 works better..

Try renting a 70-200mm 2.8 and a 1.4X, I wouldn't recommend a 2x but if you were ok with that it would make the lens a 140-400mm at 5.6
