Im currently attanding a local community college for photography, and i'm looking to get a job starting out in the photography field. I was thinking about getting a job at Glamour Shots to get a feel for how professionals work with models/clients on a portrait shoot. Is this a smart decision, or is it not considering they are, in essence, just a retail store. Any suggestions/advice would be great!! hanks =)

Take anything you can get, this will give you experience, i wouldn't expect to be paid much if at all starting out ,help out other professionals ( like you mentioned) shoot weddings w/ wedding photo-gs..
There will come a point where you realize that you could do what they do and do it.
Its always about 3 things, right place at the right time, who you know, and most importantly, know your equipment.

I keep looking on Craigslist for photographers in the area and sending out e-mails asking about going along as an assistant for a shoot, once the spring semister ends im definatly looking into something part time with a wedding photographer, I wanna see hands on how a photoshoot is done and learn from the experence. Thanks again, the advice is great!

Don't let yourself get too disheartened with the lack of response to your job searches. The competition is pretty fierce in some areas. I posted an add on a couple of sites looking for assistants on an as needed basis. I was totally shocked with the response, I only read the first 50-75 and after that they all started to look the same. It was everything from people with point and shoots to people who claimed to be a photographer with a website but would work for free. There were more than I expected that were willing to pay me to get the experience.

I dont know where you are located but of all the commercial style studios Ive been in, Portrait Innovations was my fav. So if there is one in your area, thats another place to consider trying for a job. All of their work is done hand held. Tons of outfit changes and non stop sessions
