i just recently shot a wedding last weekend. all of my RAW files came in fine, except for one folder. i can't open any of them. all images were shot on the same card using the same card reader, and for some reason, one of the folders is acting up. i can't open them with photoshop, or dng converter. i get a message saying "it is not the right kind of document". i shot about 900 images. anyone?

Did yu trnansfer the files to the HDD and tried to open it or are you trying to open it in the CF???
If it is in the HDD that would open then in the CF. If that works then there might be an error during the transfer. Transfer again and see if it will work. You can transfer to same folder and overwrite the 1st attempt since it doesn't work anyway.

camera is digital rebel 300. i dumped all the images on to the computer and formatted the card for another go around. so the images are not on the CF card now.

Carrie, i'm sorry to say that none of the programs I tried (Photoshop CS2, IrfanView) can open that file, it appears to be corrupt. I just emailed you, if you've not used the card much since then it might be able to recover the file, let me know here or by email and i'll send you a link to recovery software.

Sorry to hear that you formatted the CF, but this might help if Tim hasn't sent you the links:

This is a Demo RescuePro software that will at least let you see if it will be able to recover the file before buying ($40). I haven't had the need to use it yet but have heard good thing about it. There might be some free ones out there. You can also get a free copy when you buy a Sandisk Extreme III CF and Extreme CF. The Extreme CF 512MB goes for around $50 and the Extreme III 1GB for around $109
From the file size it sounds like there was only one shot in the folder (7.5MB), but that doesn't mean that there wasn't more.

I can post a link to a legal, free image recovery program if it'll help. I've posted it before, a search should find it.

I just thought it was strange that the fold is only 7.5MB, because my DRebel in RAW is 6MB each shot. But, I hope you can recover the photos. I hope that Tim can locate the free ones for you so I could have reference to the sites too. Good luck.

there are 29 RAW files in the folder that i need. they're between 5.5 – 7.5MB in size. it seems that the info is there, and i can see a thumbnail view of them. they look great... just can't open them.

Can you get it to a PC and try it there. There is old thread that Tim posted a link to Digital Image Recovery but it is a PC only application if you are interested here is the link to the thread:

I spoke with a gentleman at RescuePro. Unfortunately my problem is greater than that. The images that were shot were during the middle of the day, and I shot a great number after that, filling up my card again. So a recovery on the CF card is useless. I basically have to find out a way to recover the RAW CRW files that are saved on my hard drive. Fun stuff.

carrie try the free demo of photorescue if you can see the thumbs you should be able to save the shots! i re formatted my card too but photorescue found the wedding shots AND the everglade shots from months ago (january!) if you see the thumbs with photorescue, youll have to buy the full version to complete the save... well worth the $29.00 plus you can e-mail support to ask questions.. Pierre is an awsome guy!

One of the canon pieces of software can extractthe jpg thumbnail from the raw, I suspect thatt's the best that can be done. Someone else will know what piece of software it is.
