We have had some snow over the hills here in Canberra and this was one of the more unusual shapes and sizes of cloud that passed over us in the last couple of days. Can anyone tell me what type of cloud it is so I can rename it more acurately, rather than just a long cloud over the suburbs!

Weird! The top clouds look like Cumulus and the others look a bit like Cirrus but I thought they went horizontally. It's certainly weird the way it goes up in a column with a lower layer looking totally different. It's a good shot with the light highlighting one house.

Thanks, I thought I would leave the houses in to show just how large this cloud was vertically. It was actually taken late in the afternoon less than an hour before sunset so the sun was very low and only peeping through at times through other clouds.

That cloud looks pretty ominous. It could be in a stage converting from a Cumulus, with the upcurrent, into a Cumulonimbus. (more rain, and snow).

Nice shot btw.

Thanks for that Wazza, now I can change the name to something a bit more appropriate.

The things you learn on this forum, I would of bet that it doesn't snow in Australia.

It actually snows in a few parts of Australia - mostly as a result of altitude (places above 1000metres or so). They even have a ski-season in the Snowy Mountains.

It is an unusual cloud. Send a copy of the pic to the Bureau of Meterology and see what they amke of it, www.bom.gov.au
