Whats the best way to carry a camera when walking about with a heavy lens on it ? Is it safe for the camera just to be worn around your neck or on your shoulder. I have a 350D, just got a Bigma & wasn't certain the mount on such a small camera would survive this over time.
I walked about today just holding in my hands by the tripod mount today but found after a while to get very heavy

I used to cradle the lens. Held camera so the grip was cupped in my left hand and lens ran up left arm.
Nowadays, though, it's mostly mounted on my Wimblerley Head so the whole rig - camera, lens, head and tripod - just rests on my left shoulder.
cheers,
jim

With the Bigma.. you might try mounting it to a monopod,.. and then slinging this over the shoulder.. other wise I'd put a strap on the Bigma.. the XT weighs next to nothing.. and the Bigma weighs.. well... a lot. There will be MUCH less stress on the mounts if you carry the lens as sopposed to the tiny XT ;)

I thought as much, I think maybe I might try the monopod as that sounds alot easier & might help improve my shots also. Can't hurt, besides it gives me an excuse to buy something else to play with:p

But the Bigma has a carry handle as part of the tripod mount! Why not just use that. I carried mine like that lots of times and not a problem.

While shooting, put the monopod on the lens, carry the whole thing by grabing the "foot" (where the tripod collar meets the monopod) with your hand, strap around your neck for insurance. When not really shooting, take the monopod off.

I have one of those small camera bags that you can wear round your waste. Not the really tiny ones –*an OutPack. It will take a body and large lens and makes carrying it much easier (I just sling it over my shouder as it's very padded).
It's just one zip to release it. I don't like wearing large lens combinations with just the neckstrap as it ties up my hands too much.
I wonder why it's called a Bigma

That does not sound very nice at all.

I carry my 100-400 over my shoulder and neck 'tarzan-style' I leave the strap long enough so that if there's a shot I see I can swivel it up to my face. or wriggle out in no time...
but there's a bit of a challenge handholding a bigma I believe...
